Why if the country is Great Britain, and the people are British, do they all seem to speak English?

RubySoo · 56-60, F
Because the English tried in the 19th century to discourage use of native accents here in Wales children were punished in schools for speaking in Welsh.

The Welsh language us alive and well in Wales, but ive yet go meet a welsh speaker who doesnt also speak English.
Remember Britain is quite tiny with people crossing borders every day for work, education and leisure. It actuallh only in my lifetime signage in public places is all bilingual...they were mostly just English until quite recently. I still over hear often English visitors moaning at a welsh sign or accusing welsh speakers if being rude for speaking their own tongue in their own country.
Well in fact Wales has its own language and I think parts of Scotland have their own abbreviation of language. Also I would argue that many English people do not actually know how to speak English properly and another thing people from the north and south of England are speaking the same language but it’s often so much different to each other.

There are other languages spoken; Welsh, Scots Gaelic, Scots. Tjere is also increased in Cornish and Cumbric, which were dead languages.
British English is the standard dialect of the English language as spoken and written in the United Kingdom.
Yes because England is in Britain.
@D3cad3nt Not all languages are named after a country. There are language options like English (UK) and English (USA)
RubySoo · 56-60, F
@littlepuppywantanewlife but England is in Britain.....England alone is NOT Britain.
@RubySoo that's true.

Great Britain is the island. It's a geographical landmass not a country.

The United Kingdom is the country but there are countries INSIDE the United Kingdom.

One of them is England. That's where English comes from.
MarieUK · 36-40, F
@CountScrofula Great Britain is the name we gave our selves at the height of the Empire I think, I maybe wrong though
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@MarieUK I think the Romans or Greeks are the origin of the name, but you're right it wasn't really used by the British until the empire was hoppin'
MarieUK · 36-40, F
@CountScrofula never 100% correct but always right I've been told many times 🤣

Great Britain or The United Kingdom is really along the lines of the United States Of America, with the exception that with us Brits, each part is an actual country - England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales...

English is the common language of the unified kingdom.

The country was known as England before its moniker 'Great Britain' was used.

William Shakespeare invented 14,000 English words, so they say. only 8,000 of them still in use.

Plus English is not their official language. They never chose to make it official.

England is in Britain
D3cad3nt · 22-25, F
@GLITTER Yes, I did geography at school! But why is the British language called English?
GLITTER · 36-40, F
@D3cad3nt it’s not, but it’s the generic language of the empire, as it is the generic language of the world, ie it’s used it USA, Australia etc. . But there is also a Welsh, Irish and Scottish language. They’re just not commonly used
MarieUK · 36-40, F
[@Drcad3nt] @GLITTER Welsh Gaelic , Irish Gaelic Scottish Gaelic, I'm not sure if the are the same Language or not as I only speak English myself
