What would he have thought?

So my ex colleague and I caught up over lunch today. While paying the bill, he was ready to split the bill but I told him, "Hey it's okay, I'll pay because you have to pay rent and all other expenses and I don't need to worry about all that because I live with my parents."
I hope I didn't make him feel like less of a man or something??
I think it was a lovely gesture and I very much doubt if he took it any way but that. Next time maybe suggest a picnic- you bring chips and drinks, I'll bring sandwiches. You don't want to pay everything always but there's nothing wrong with working within somebody's budget. Glad it went well.

Don't bother.

Let him feel whatever. If he is mature, he'd take you for your face value & understand your concern but at the same time, you need to remember other perspectives too mentioned herein the comments section.

You see, girl - Change is the only constant, as you too are aware of.

Tread your path with hopes & smiles.
You have to watch that. Being nice, people come to expect more and more from you.

@MushroomFaerie that's true... should keep it in mind the next time.
@Heretodaygonetomorrow She made a point that I had in mind to share. Do not forget it.
You should have just paid and spared him the speech.

Nicer than way.
Very nice gesture indeed.
