What does this line from a poem mean to you: "Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses"?

Hmmm... I think it was associated with some friction or problem in on eof the industries in the past. The hostile working conditions of the workers caused them great emotional distress as well as physical distress. It was, if I can write this correctly, an almost revolutionary appeal to the masters of industry.
@flipper1966 It was the best I could recall, to be honest. I'm sure that there is much more information out there on 'the web'!!
@EugenieLaBorgia There's actually a Wikipedia article about it.
