I Have a Dog

My dog broke my heart. Arent animals especially dogs, supposed to be loving and loyal?

I will take you back to when I first got him 2 and a half years ago. I selected him because he was very playful and friendly. I needed a dog so badly for my emotional state, just really wanted to experience having love in my life for a change.

From the moment I got him he was a bundle of joy and I did everything I could for him and with him. I gave him so much attention, never missed a day without giving him affection.

What changed? He became spoiled and lazy. He doesnt come when I call him. He shows little concern or regard for me. He just lays in bed all day completely on the other side of the house. He is healthy, and somewhat young, but just not a companion. I feed him well, walk him everyday, give him treats, give him toys, talk to him, pet him, wrestle with him, but he just acts so independant.

Its so sad when I think about how much love I have for him,but he does not reciprocate.

Don't be sad, some breeds are just more independent. I'm sure he still loves you very much. Sometimes I experience the same with my dog, when I really want him around he's off doing his own thing. I've learned not to take it personally though. I chose his breed for their tendency to be independent. Just go in the room and hang out with him during those times.

@Lisette: thank you. I will try.

sounds like you got a cat in dogs clothing

@Sebastianblack: the dog sees you giving that much attention to a cat...that is jealousy.

@annamarie65: No he doesnt. I hardly give the cats any attention. My room mate takes care of them.

I am not going to argue. I am just stating the way dogs behave..

He loves you. He's probably just too stubborn to show it.

That's typical for dogs, my dog has became lazy as well. I think she knows that she's 140lbs and nobody will move her even if they tried.

@Sebastianblack: That may be the problem. Some smaller terriers - like schnauzers and rats - can be very affectionate. Many of the larger and longer-legged breeds, not so much.

@hlpflwthat: he's a medium size. his legs are short. He definitely has the face of a Schnauzer.

I feel for you - but don't be heart-broken. He probably loves you much as he can love someone.
