There was a loud high pitched buzzing noise, the kind that made your teeth vibrate, that ended suddenly, with an audible pop that shook the ground. The Machine, bearing a strong resemblance to the Time Machine from the original 1960 film of the same name, slowly powered down, spinning cogs and arcing lightning between various antennae lessening in frequency. The sole occupant of the Machine, a man physically entering his middle ages, despite the youthful and contagious spirit, looked around intently.
"Status report!" he barked at no one in particular, but the Machine answered in a soft feminine voice.
"All systems functional. Portal jump to Similar Worlds successful."
"Things look... different." the man scratched his chin, looking confused. "Almost like... no! Can't have happened... Any anomalies...?"
"The current year is 2017, and Donald J. Trump is President of the United States." Upon hearing this, the man swore sharply under his breath.
"Lost an entire year...!" he slapped the dashboard. "That'll teach me to fool around when portal jumping. Shouldn't have taken you to 88 MPH. Doc Brown said there'd be consequences. I had no idea it would cost Bernie the Presidency. Is there anyway to fix this?"
"Not without unraveling the Continuum, Mr. Frost." the Machine replied flatly. "Trends indicate he will be impeached within 13 months."
"Who's his Veep...?" the man asked, concerned.
"Pence." the Machine announced, much to the man's surprise.
"Why would he pick an ambitious Establishment running mate...?" the man said incredulously, "I'm surprised he's going to last that long. It's like he wants this to happen!"
"Hard to speculate, Mr. Frost."
"Well... whatever. We'll adapt." the man dismissed the news, and activated a scanning device. "Locate all Experience Project survivors, and generate a list of any indigenous lifeforms worth knowing."
"Working..."
"I wonder if these folks are ready for me..." the man smiled, and stepped out of the Machine onto the alien soil. "Well... That's one small step for Gwydion Frost, one giant step for Similar Worlds..."
