I say keep the filters up and slowly get to know your way around. There's good and bad here, of course.

In addition to my earlier post, I first joined Similiar Worlds' predecessor "Experience Project" about 8 or 9 years ago when I was going through a tough time. I met some really great people who were helpful and kind and in turn was able to help others which I found greatly therapeutic myself. While this site lacks some of the spirit of EE I still think there are decent people here and overall they are the majority.
