I Am a Bad Liar

This reminded me of a story my daughter told me. She was shopping in a thrift store and a man said Hello! to her in the pleased ‘where have you been all my life?’ Voice. She answered with a more muted Hi. He stood and watched her long enough she was uncomfortable and moved a couple of aisles away to look at boots. She got a text and paused to answer, during which the guy joined her again. He said, Can I have your phone number? Forgetting her phone was still in her hand, she said I don’t have a phone. He glanced pointedly at the phone but said, ‘why don’t you come have dinner with me?’

She replied, ‘I don’t eat....dinner.’

‘Okay, how about lunch?’

She was flustered now and saying anything that might make him go away. ‘I don’t like lunch.’

‘You don’t eat lunch or dinner? Ever?’

‘No, I don’t,’ she said firmly and strode away from him and left the store.

Bet you’re better at lying than she is.

Why should I believe that?

I don't like to lie. I'm honest. But when I do, I can even convince them that they're wrong.
