I Experienced Racism

[c=#BF0080]Originally posted on EP.[/c]

[c=#BF0080]Or Prejudice? I'm not sure which one fits this scenario best. Anyways, it was back in high school when i was in 11th grade. I'm black and this was the time that my fashion sense started to peak, i got more into cosmetics, using them, buying them, and teaching others how to do their nails and stuff because i got interested in nail art around this time to. There was and still is an independently owned beauty supply store at my home shopping center. I used to go there very frequently after school, and buy nail polish to add to my now heaping nail polish collection i have on my wall. The store owner who happened to be a white man seemed alright. He used to joke with me and say "Manicure time again i see?!! ;)" And i would laugh and joke along with him. Despite his kindness i noticed that he always payed EXTRA close attention to me whenever i came in there. I figured i was thinking to deep into it though because i am prone to some super paranoia and i figured store owners keep an eye on the customers anyways. Well one day i went in there to buy some nail polish again. I went over to the isle and reached into my bag to put my phone away after a call. I'm telling you he went straight up INSANE! He ran over to me and screamed startling me and said "NAH UH, NAH UH! TAKE IT OUT OF YOUR BAG!" Now i was 16 here you guys.... If this was me NOW I would have cussed this mofo's ass out! I stood up for myself and told him that i only put something of mine in my bag, and he apologized. I still bought what i wanted but again, if this were NOW. I would have stormed out and never have bought a thing from there again. I took a 2 month hiatus from shopping there to kind of release some tension and then i went back again. Boy was i wrong in ever going back. When i did i went to the nail polish isle as usual and the white man who was the manager stopped me and said "Hey i think you're stealing from my store!" Then he called some black woman who was in the back handling supplies over to identify if it were me and she nodded her head yes. Infuriated because clearly these ignorant fools had no idea what they were talking about i left immediately! I came back with my mom the same day and she cussed them out, and the manager said it had nothing to do with RACE even though we never even said to him that we thought he was racist, so clearly he was! He said they just had a problem with kids from the high school stealing a lot. Yea right. RACIST FOOL! -.- I never went back there again![/c]
I would have made a much bigger deal than that even at 16. My parents would have been even worse
I'm shyish but I get pissed off really easy. In certain racist situations I know when and how to react.

In that one I would have given him a mouthful and a half.

@DemonicPersona I look back and I hate that I didn't do that!
it's ok

Your race has nothing to do with it. I am white and plenty of times, I have been stopped, my bag searched, my shopping cart questioned when security didn't see clearly the paid sticker on an unbagged grocery item.

Yes it is annoying to be accused of something you didn't do. But in today's world businesses are paying a huge price with rampant shoplifting and fraud going on constantly. Small businesses especially can't afford to be victims of shoplifting.

@therighttothink50 Okay I agree that we all get stopped for this reason. But as an African American I am prone to having it happen more because of my skin color. In all honesty people are very brainwashed and judge by color. Even though everyone has this happen if it happens to me it's because I'm black. Not because I'm a person.

@xRockGlossPrincessx How about white people who lose jobs or a chance to attend their college choice based on affirmative action or racial quotas, do they have a gripe as well? When is the crap going to stop and people start referring themselves as just Americans? I am of italian decent, I would never think of calling myself an Italian American. Believe it or not every group has been discriminated against in every time period in history. Time to move on, because selective outrage just creates more backbiting and hate.

There are certain things set up for blacks just because we don't have the same privileges as whites. I assume that's what you meant. @therighttothink50

I understand what you feel 🙁.. But sometimes, when we feel that people treat us differently because of our race, we may fool ourselves that it's the case even when it's not.. Or maybe I'm wrong and he was really racist.. But it's better not to take such situations seriously.. They don't know you anyway.. And a lot of people are paranoid when it comes to their business

Paranoia or not they need a camera. @SW-User

@xRockGlossPrincessx True! They don't have the right to offend customers for them being stupid

It's sad that anyone has to be profiled in any type situation but I know from experience that retail is tough you have to watch everybody but in time you learn friend from foe sounds like that guy had his head to far to his ass to see that you were a good customer or he is blinded by race ether way his head was up his ass
xRockGlossPrincessx · 26-30, F
@metalicblack I'm hoping he's a better person now.

@xRockGlossPrincessx unfortunately once an idiot always an idiot especially in that kind of job

Since the employee from the back nodded her head to affirm it was you, perhaps she was the one who had been stealing. She made have told him some elaborate story to cover up her thefts and you just fell in place as the patsy. Most companies lose more from employee theft than from external sources.
xRockGlossPrincessx · 26-30, F
@lasergraph Omg I never thought about that! Wow!
lasergraph · 70-79, M
@xRockGlossPrincessx She was quick to say it was you. She may have even created a story with you as the villain to cover her tracks. .

Neither would I.. What is it with racism and the USA?? Racism is sooo... dated??
xRockGlossPrincessx · 26-30, F
Sadly it's sometimes subconscious. Brought on from societal upbringing or home upbringing. You may think you don't see things the same way, but the subconscious damage is still there. @walabby
walabby · 61-69, M
@xRockGlossPrincessx It's probably always subconscious. People need to take command of their own minds. :(
