I Love Television

12 Monkeys went from an "I can't believe they're going to turn that into a TV series" premise to a brilliant and touching work of television art. While I'm sorry to see it go, the ending was all but completely satisfying.

I've never heard of it. What was it about?

@Dewkissedrose It was very loosely based on the Terry Gilliam movie from the '90s. There is a plague that wipes out all but a handful of people. It's believed that the virus was released by a group called the Army of the 12 Monkeys. In the movie, James Cole, played by Bruce Willis, is sent back in time in order to get a sample of the original virus so they can develop a cure in the future. In the TV series, Cole, played by Aaron Stanford, is sent back to assassinate the person they believe is responsible for releasing the virus.

The TV series diverges considerably from the movie. In the movie, there is no way to affect causality — nothing Cole does in the past can change it. In the TV series, that's not the case — time travellers screw with causality all the time, and ultimately that is intrinsic to the resolution of the series.

It was on Syfy. For some reason, they dumped all of season 3 in one day, and then burned off season 4 with three episodes a week.

It was really surprisingly good, and unlike a lot of shows, actually got better as it went.
