What is the worst book you have ever read?

The pillars of the earth by Ken Follett - 900 pages about some dork building a church in the Middle Ages poorly written.

@Harriet03 Seriously? That shit is full of giants , demons,angels and killing shit - got it all lol
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
@SW-User Both hilarious and shocking!!
@SW-User That means that demons and angels exist, and giants existed in the ancient world.

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. I know she wins rave reviews and many awards but I agree with this original review

"...dreadfully badly written... Mantel just wrote and wrote and wrote. I have yet to meet anyone outside the Booker panel who managed to get to the end of this tedious tome. God forbid there might be a sequel, which I fear is on the horizon." — Susan Bassnett, in Times Higher Education
SW-User
@SW-User I agreed with her fully. It was like an unedited stream of consciousness completely unedited. Awful
SW-User
@SW-User sounds brutal
SW-User
@SW-User was my experience with it

I’ve read so many horrible boring books.... I’m amazed that they were ever published. Whenever someone tells me that they have paid to have a book published I know it must be a true toilet paper rag because publishers will publish anything if they think it will sell.
SW-User
@Muthafukajones it’s amazing really is t it 🤷‍♂️
SW-User
In general if it becomes obvious that a book is no good, I don't read it all the way through.

But in middle school I remember reading this book about a school shooting and the ensuing draconian rules at the school that followed. I know the book was making a point about what not to do in the wake of a school shooting, but even at age 12, I thought the book was stupid, especially in the way that all the parents were brainwashed through emails from the school, as if that could actually happen. This was back when you could post a "kid's review" on Amazon and I did so, a negative one. lol

@SW-User life is too short really

The Bible. Reading it is what turned me against religion. An incredibly stupid and evil book!
SW-User
@hunkalove fair enough
assemblingaknob · 26-30, F
City of bones. I never read past the first book. So poorly written I could gag. I'm surprised it has a loyal fan base. But stuff like this makes me feel I can make some cash as a writer too 🤭

@assemblingaknob Great publicist

Clockwork orange. Too difficult
Doomflower · 36-40, M
@ScarletWitch this breaks my heart because it really is brilliant when you get past the language. The language itself is part of the over all dystopian picture of the world at that time.

The movie completely changes the real ending too. It's a shame.
ScarletWitch · 26-30, F
@Doomflower I have forgotten how the real ending happened. If you feel free to share I'll listen. 🤗
Doomflower · 36-40, M
@ScarletWitch So the movie and the original American release of the book ended at, "i was cured all right" implying that he was back to being mega evil and would continue as before.

In the real ending he is given a cushy job and basically goes back to his old life in his free time but it lacks flavor. He starts a new gang. His heart just isn't really in it any more. Then Alex meets one of his old droogs who has dropped the silly nadsat speak and settled down and he realizes that's what he wants. The book ends with him growing up.

The Turner Diaries

This racist mean spirited tome has encouraged a lot of racist cults and groups. I had to read it for research. I bought a copy, then regretted giving the publisher and also the author any money.

I truly felt this was an evil book. But I couldn't bring myself to burn it; the thought made me feel like a Nazi. So I decided to year it into pieces and then throw it into my apartment dumpster. The thought that no one would ever read it again comforted me.
SW-User
@greenmountaingal Doesn’t sounds great
G00GLE · 22-25, M
Any book that has more pages than pictures is bad!
SW-User
@G00GLE You’re not German 😂
G00GLE · 22-25, M
@SW-User I am, I just hate reading. I liked when I was younger and I was able to see what I was reading in my head, but now I just see words and get bored really quickly.
SW-User
@G00GLE was messing 🙂

@SW-User Agreed, just imagine how bad pillars of the earth must be in that case 🤭
SW-User
@SW-User 😂😂😂 Don't try to read War and Peace.
SW-User
@SW-User I won’t 😂
Doomflower · 36-40, M
Anything written by Jules Verne. It is hard sci fi and was probably exciting in its time but I get bored to tears reading about the way he imagines submarines work or the extensive preparation for trips to the center of the earth.
SW-User
SW-User
@Doomflower Read that one about a submarine, was a bit of a slog
Doomflower · 36-40, M
@SW-User one of the few authors where I think the movies are much better than the books.
summersong · F
I absolutely despised Catcher in the Rye

@summersong it’s on my to do list

Any book I can't finish, no matter how hard I try.

The Gulag Archipelago by Solzhenitsyn. Tried getting through it 3 or 4 separate times. I could not get past the Russian naming protocol and couldn't follow any of the characters. Never made it more than 1/2 way through without giving up in disgust.
SW-User
@bowman81 sounds like it could be interesting too!
AlyAngel · F
A child called it, it was horrible to read what happened to that poor boy.

As far as poorly written book, I'd have to say twilight
SW-User
@AlyAngel A boy called it would be a tough read
SW-User
LOL. I liked that book. I also liked his trilogy Fall of Giants. Historical fiction is my favorite genre.
SW-User
@SW-User Christ it was awful lol

The Secret Doctrine by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky
SW-User
@SW-User It's both bonkers AND dull!! 😵
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@SW-User Try reading this first:
Morning of the Magician

It takes some background reading to understand what Blavatsky is writing about.
SW-User
@greenmountaingal thanks :)

Twilight and all of its fan fictions. (50 shades of grey and 365 days)
SW-User
@JBird well done on slogging thru them all !
JBird · F
@SW-User nah, I read only the first chapter of all those books and immediately threw them away.
SW-User
@JBird good choice lol
if it doesn't catch my interest in the first 4 words i forget it.

The sound and the fury by william faulkner :|
SW-User
@TryingtoLava uh oh 😬
bowman81 · M
@TryingtoLava Faulkner is tough, love his stuff but very difficult to read. Often need an original edition or you miss a lot of symbolism. ie. "The Fable" was printed in three colors of ink and had a necessary symbol (for understanding) embossed on the binding that was missing from later editions.
