People who read a lot: Do you ever wish a character in a book was real...

....and you could hang out IRL? What fictional character would you like to hang out with?

I’ve got a few:
1 - Roz, Tony, and Charis from The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood.
2 - Wexford and Burden (and their wives, and Wexford’s daughters) from the Ruth Rendell books.
3 - DCI Alan Banks from the Peter Robinson books. (Actually, I’d like to date him. I get a little bit jealous of the women he dates. Except Annie. I liked her, so if they got back together, that would be cool.)
4 - DS Barbara Havers and DI Thomas Lynley from the Elizabeth George books.
Actually Atticus and Scout from To Kill A Mockingbird. Everybody from The Outsiders but specifically Ponyboy, Johnny, and Sodapop. And lastly from The Great Gatsby Jay, Nick, and Daisy.

I usually fall in love with the characters when I’m reading the book. I also usually cry a little at the end of any good book, like it’s goodbye 🥺😏
When i used to read books i just used to wish there was more to read like more of the store and another book after about the story..

But as far as the people themselves being real.. there is probably someone like them in the real world somewhere

I was content with the books tho

@SStarfish I just finished a re-read of one of my favorite books (The Robber Bride; Atwood) - and I found out that years later, she wrote a short story about the same characters.

I got so excited, I scoured the Internet for that story, and found it’s in a collection of short stories she published in 2014.

So I bought the collection. That story will be my treat for after working today.
@SmartKat aww nice!! Congrats ☺️👍🏼

Back a gazillion years ago when I was a kid he read some old series of books with the protagonist "Tom Swift". I wanted to meet him.
Today I if I could pick a fictional character to hangout with, Gandalf.

Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye....or Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird!
luctoretemergo · 61-69, M
@Fallflower And I'd tell him "do you realize what a fuss people have made over you!" :)
SmartKat · 56-60, F
@luctoretemergo Holden? Meh.

When I was young, there was a YA author named M.E. Kerr who wrote books that I just loved. I wished (still wish) that the characters in her books were real.

I would love to spend time with them:

The Phantom - "The Phantom of the Opera" by Gaston Leroux

Mr. Rochester - "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Brontë
Most of what I read is non-fiction so I don’t have that problem. Right now I’m reading One Mans Wilderness by this guy named Dick Proenneke. He basically went out into the wilds of Alaska and built a home for himself just using the natural resources he encountered, with his bare hands and simple tools. Lived off the land out there for 30 years on his own. Awesome book

@DrawntoaDistance He sounds admirable, but I don’t think he and I would have much in common. 😂
Travelbug · 56-60, F
Meggie from the Thornbirds
SmartKat · 56-60, F
@Travelbug I liked Justine and Rainer.

Sure. Court Gentry, Harry Bosch, Jack Reacher, Walt Longmire. And a couple others.
Sometimes maybe.
