What did women find so appealing about 50 shades of Gray?
Coralmist · 41-45, F Best Comment
I think many liked the idea of being 'bad'...the woman Dakota Johnson plays is one who is innocent and has never experienced many sexual settings. So Christian shows her this world of letting go..of just giving in to extreme pleasure , but HE will be the one to give it, mixed with pain too. Almost like a forbidden thing...I think that's what the story wanted to give to readers/women..a fantasy of letting go in an extreme way.

Wow. This was extremely insightful and helpful. Thanks!@Coralmist

I'll give you my male perspective.

I had a girlfriend who's an avid reader, so books were on my regular gift list, and I usually went by the NY Times list. I had no clue what 50 Shades of Gray was about, but it ended up as a gift for her. Up to that point, I thought of her as more of an extreme feminist, and an academic/scientist.

Then, she asked me to read it. And I did, and figured out immediately why she asked me to read it.

It turns out she's a submissive, and had no idea how to bring it up...

I saw the movie, and it was disappointing. What I could not figure out, about the book, is how the author, a British woman, who did not live in Seattle, knew so much about Seattle and Washington state. A lot of the places she describes in the book, are only known by locals. The parking lot, where they end up after the car chase, is now gone, replaced by the Weyerhaeuser glass headquarters.
Some girls dig it but we’re not hive mind. I didn’t.
@Jasondf I’ve had girlfriends that like BDSM. Something turns them on by loss of control and feeling helpless. Sorry. That’s all I got.

E.L. James essentially tapped into the fantasies of a lot of women who had read the "Twilight" series. She discovered there was a market for a story about a rich, good looking dom who seduced a virgin into the world of light sadomasochism sex play.

It took off from there.

Men would not understand. This is female pornography. Just like a lot of women don't understand men's fascination with hard core pornography.

Thanks for your point of view. It helps.

Some women like being shocked out of their minds...and some don't. But even though I was never interested in the book, I did see the movie, and I thought to myself at the time that it takes all kinds of freaky people to make up a world...and some live it, and most don't.
Jasondf · M
I’m not into that kind of play. I just cannot help but wonder why some are into it. I want to understand that mindset a bit more. Any insight you may have would be appreciated @4meAndyou

A virgin girl fangirling? I mean, she is inexperienced. Eager and in love with a man...

Sex is always exciting, hormones and pain stuffs.

I didn't personally enjoy the 50 Shades books or movie. I felt like it gave the world a very inaccurate depiction of what a D/s relationship is in the real world. I have friends that thought it was risque and naughty but it is not real. Highly fantasized.
Northwest · M
@Fungirlmmm
a D/s relationship is in the real world
I did some research about it, at the time. But, isn't it really about the individual, as opposed to some strict set of guidelines? It's not like there's a school you go to, to get a D/s degree :-)

@Northwest I can only base my observations from being an adult blogger for many years and the people I came in contact through that and the other bdsm couples that we associated in our circles (and 2 different Doms). Many of those that read my blog considered the relationship (64% of respondents at the time that identified in a D/s role) to be an abusive one. I wish I had not decommissioned my Blog because I had some really fun polls and more than a few followers that would come back week after week to comment and participate in games, contests, and blogs. Interestingly I had persons that identified as vanilla (a "sub question " I asked in my polls) thought the Grey series was more real than the BDSM community that followed me. I used to learn so much from my polls on my blog. I really should start a new one.
Northwest · M
@Fungirlmmm You mean 64% considered the relationship between the books characters' to be abusive? What do they base that on?

You should restart your blog.

I wasn't in to it at all.
Jasondf · M
If you had to guess. What do you think people found appealing about it?@Peaches

I didn't care for the books, and didn't see the movies.

@Jasondf I don't like it, because I'm not into chick flicks. Blow shit up! Kill something, ffs!🤣🤣
Jasondf · M
Me too. That’s why we’re buds. What I meant to say is, Why do you think they like it. @SW-User
SW-User
@Jasondf because they have unreal expectations of what love is "supposed to be."
Society has filled women's heads for decades with that fairytale bs, Jase!🤣
Mona86 · C
It’s seduction not rape, it may have been or seemed as torture but he was seducing an innocent inexperienced woman
Jasondf · M
Why do some people find that appealing you think?@Mona86
Mona86 · C
I’ve never watched it or read it just heard of it@Jasondf
vorian · 51-55, M
It's so badly written.
Porn for people that don't like porn.
Jasondf · M
I know!! Worst storyline I’ve seen in some time. @vorian
vorian · 51-55, M
@Jasondf it excited a whole host of dull vanilla housewives...but the sex was nothing special.
DragonSlayerr · 26-30, F
Uh not all women bud. That movie is super problematic and a huge snooze fest.
Jasondf · M
Why do you think some people liked it so much? I’m trying to understand
Moonpenny · F
I read all three just to see what the hype was about. I've forgotten 99.9% of it.
calicuz · 51-55, M
The book they liked
the movie they hated
Jasondf · M
But what specifically was so appealing about that story? @calicuz
calicuz · 51-55, M
@Jasondf

In the book, every woman got to use her imagination as to what the man looked like
JupiterDreams · 31-35
I was never interested in it. Not my cuppa tea
Jasondf · M
If you had to take a wild guess, why do you think people liked it?@JupiterDreams
