When is the last time you spent an entire night reading and being totally absorbed into a book ?

And what book was it ?
This is what I did last night but the whole thing was triggered by a storm.

Yesterday afternoon my area of South Africa was hit by a storm. I have only experienced such strong winds once before. It knocked out the electricity and I can't even get out of my driveway today because it's blocked by fallen trees.
Anyway...so I decided to read by the light of a rechargeable solar lamp. I sat in total darkness except for the lamp and started to read Stephen King's "Duma key".
After a while I got up to make tea. I had no idea of the time because my phone battery had died and I have no other clocks in the house.

I thought it was about midnight but then I heard chirping birds. I thought 2 things. "How did those little birds survive that storm" and, "Those sound like early morning birds. It can't be".
So I look outside and there is the faint glow of early sunrise. What ?
I look at the book and there is my bookmark 3/4 of the way through the book !
I had just read through the entire night without knowing.
So I would just like to offer Mr King a huge amount of respect, kudos and stuff. The man is a literally a literary wizard. All hail the honourable Mr King ! 🙂

I am known to read into the wee hours. I am a bit of a night owl. I was even worse when I was young and single and I am sure there were a few nights I read until dawn.

Glad you made it through the storm. Wow! Wicked wind really can do a lot of damage.
Peapod · 61-69, F
@Wraithorn, you worry about the same things I would. Glad the storm passed. Hopefully no one was hurt. Hail is darn scary too.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Peapod Unfortunately some people did die. Nobody that I know though.
Peapod · 61-69, F
@Wraithorn , 😥
Piper · 61-69, F
I don't recall right off, ever reading through a whole night until dawn. Plenty of times into the wee hours, though. Many of those times, it has also been a Stephen King book. :)

I'm glad you're okay, Wraithorn.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Piper Thanks. Ol' Steve knows how to weave an interesting story doesn't he ? He's a master.
Piper · 61-69, F
@Wraithorn Yes, he certainly does. I guess was about 22, when I 'discovered' Stephen King books.

I am so glad that you survived safely. I would have been very frightened to brave such a windstorm alone. I have lanterns I use in the winter or during Nor'easters, and I read during our last lengthy power outage.

I used to read voraciously, and constantly. But in 2008, when I left the ex, I was no longer able to concentrate. I still remember sitting in a doctors office trying to read a fascinating article on archaeology...and I had to read the first paragraph over and over again because I couldn't understand it.

It's all better now...only took about 5 years to recover my reading ability.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@4meAndyou Wow. 5 yrs ? That divorce must have shredded your mind a bit. I cannot imagine life without reading. I am glad you got that ability back. Good for you.
4meAndyou · F
@Wraithorn It was a horrid time...filled with so many weird and horrible incidents that my brother told me I was cursed. But all is well, and no need to dwell.
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
I haven’t read a book since at least high school. Probably even earlier.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Chevy454 And what is the reason for that ?
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
Just have no interest in reading. @Wraithorn
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Chevy454 That's a nice example of how us Humans are so similar but also so different in some ways. I suppose the world would be boring though if we all liked the same things.
Nimbus · M
1984 which happens to be the title of the book too ;)
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Nimbus Ah yes, Mr Owell's book. Can you believe that I have never read it ? I know what it's about though and it seems to be quite applicable in the world right now and becoming more so by the day. Maybe he was a reluctant prophet. 🙂
Nimbus · M
@Wraithorn Indeed, it was a prophecy.

Maybe you can see the movie online which is an accurate representation of the book?
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Nimbus I might do that one day. Thank you.
novembermoon · 51-55
It was a book by a Singaporean writer called ‘The Impractical Uses of Cake’. I finished it in two days.
The other is by another local writer called ‘Anabel Thong’.

Both books I finished in less than two days.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@novembermoon It's a great feeling being absorbed right into a book like that isn't it ? I'm glad you enjoyed those books so much. I love that feeling of my mind being safely transported into another dimension.
novembermoon · 51-55
Yes, agree very much there. @Wraithorn
WeighedDown · 36-40, M
Since I lost my glasses. Harry Dresden is a boss though.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@WeighedDown You lost your glasses ? Damn ! That sucks. I don't think I've read any of his books. I'll keep his name in mind, thanks.
WeighedDown · 36-40, M
@Wraithorn he is the character not the author doctors Jim Butcher the books are the Dresden Files about Harry Dresden think there is like 15 books.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@WeighedDown Alright, thanks for clarifying that.

I guess its been years.
I have read a total of 4 books in my life.

Wait. Does reading erotica on a web site count?
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@SW-User Were those four books really that boring that they put you off reading for life ?
SW-User
Way too long ago
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@SW-User Ah....is it the stresses of modern life ? Work ? Kids ? Marriage ? All three and more ?
SW-User
@Wraithorn All of the above.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@SW-User Oh drat ! That's a bit inconvenient. Good luck with all of that.
SW-User
Not since last summer ...I'm hoping to do that again
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@SW-User Well I hope you get the chance. It's quite an interesting and relaxing thing being so totally sucked into a book.
dalfo · 31-35, F
a few days ago
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@dalfo Good for you. Was it an interesting journey into that world ?
dalfo · 31-35, F
@Wraithorn it was & awesome after that started another one but didn't go whole night
