What's the difference between gown and dress?

Me again. I'm writing a story in English but I'm not a native speaker of the language. I handle it very well, but sometimes I have some doubts about terms.

My character is wearing a hospital gown, and I'm not sure if that's the correct term. Or is it hospital dress? Please tell me the difference and the correct term I need to use.

Thanks in advance.

Well a gown is usually an extravagant dress, but in the context you’re using here it would be a “hospital gown” not sure why they call it a gown, but in nursing it’s called a gown.
@DaughterOfTheDust now I wanna check this history.
