I don't think villains should always be complete idiots.

I think modern media displays villains as honestly stupid, mindless, & motivated by petty, typical things, yet even these motivations don't appear to be very compelling for the characters.

When a good villain is created; one with depth, thought, dimensions, passion, a vision - at the very least, we can understand the villain & why they're doing what they do, but beyond that, complex characters would allow the creators to develope incredibly intricate situations, challenging our ideologies & morals, perhaps even motivating is to (secretly) root for this villain! That their vision may be reality, & that the world might change, but almost exclusively, the hero triumphs over the villain, effectively dismissing the tumult of the villains lifetime & the ideals he had.

A movie could be made with a villain who triumphs over his adversities, opponents, & society, showing us a new different world, or at the very least, with a villain who is believable & has depth.

Did you not see The Dark Knight??

Dark Knight is an outlier, diverging from the trend instead of defining it.

I agree, the best writers can make a villain who is clearly evil but with a side that makes you empathise with them.
Too many modern writers make the villain some git who kicks puppies when walking down the street before punching a baby. It's too 2D.

And if the villain is an idiot it diminishes the hero's accomplishments too
In the end I voted to disagree. I think a villain completely depends on the situation. Some can be stupid with no plan or motive and still be amazingly effective
