If you could choose one book as a mandatory read for all high school students, which book would you choose?

The Old man and the sea.

The Total Money Makeover... kids aren't taught how to manage money!
@lilcountrygrl Practical, and a good idea.

1984, because it's exactly what's happening now.

My immediate response would be Life of Pi, however, I'm not sure that one book would be useful or appropriate for every student. I'd like to be the kind of teacher who knows where each child is at and can recommend books uniquely suited to them at that time. It's sad when someone reads a book that they are not ready for yet, or it just is not relevant to them at that point in their life, and then so much of it is missed. In fact, a lot of the books that I've read and didn't get anything out of are probably brilliant books, and I just wasn't in the right place to absorb anything meaningful from them... Wow, that went down a rabbit hole!

Did I say Life of Pi? Life of Pi.
Damn...what about like a stack of books? hard for me to pick just one.
hell i just wish they'd read more.

Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind. I know its fictional but under the story are lessons on logic and reason over blind assumptions. The story's also interesting enough to actually hold a high student's attention.
Etiquette -Emily Post-1912 and read it concurrently with the newest edition (20th edition) by her great granddaughter. Men especially.
As far as fiction goes, probably The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky. If nonfiction...maybe the Ethics of Aristotle.

The Little Prince TBH, I feel like people do good in reading it once they're a tiny bit older too
