I Love Movies

On New Years in the Big Apple The BIG CHILL had gripped the area and festivities were more reserved than usual. But I had my ace in the hole,^Mvies^ channel was having a Noir Years Eve celebration:film noir. There are some who make a distinction between "film" and "movies";I don't except to note films are for people who want to impress their friends at the Country Club.
First up was a john Huston flick,Beat the Devil. Houston took one look at the prepared script and re-wrote it with Truman Capote. Capote left at one point because his pet raven stopped talking to him over the telephone, neverthelesshis wit is seen throughout BTD

O'Hara: Time. Time. What is time? Swiss manufacture it. French hoard it. Italians squander it. Americans say it is money. Hindus say it does not exist. Do you know what I say? I say time is a crook.

Gwendolyn Chelm: I am a British subject!

Billy Dannreuther: I wouldn't say that too loud.

I could go on but honestly context is everything in a quote;O'Hara is Peter Lorre,a German who claims , Many Germans in Chile have become to be called O'Hara.

Billy is Humphrey Bogart, and the cast is "rounded out" by Gina Lollobrigida,Jennifer Jones (good rounding) and Robert Morley

But as Roger Ebert said in his review it is the bit players that make it great,an insight I can totally agree with. That it is a noir film with humor ,irony as well as the usual double-dealing of the form only amplifies the fun,and I wonn't reiterate the plot..you can watch repeats of the Big Bang Theory or tak a flyer on a B&w 1950s movie.

Sidebar: a childhood friend commented,at a funeral no less, that he thought I'd be Leonard Maltin by then and I said I tried but it was already taken!

But I love movies and I know which I'd choose
