I Have a Garden

I picked tomatoes from the garden thursday. First one ripe enough to eat today...yum! On a salad for lunch. There is no comparison to 'store bought' ones! Funny thing, I hated them as a child. My grandfather raised many acres of them and peddled around town. I despised hearing 'mater sandwiches' announced as lunch! Mmmm...for some of Paw's tomatoes.

Garden tomatoes are great. I have some on my deck. And cucumbers and squash.

@Fungirlmmm another armload last night. We finally got much needed rain and it gave them just what they were missing. One can water all day with a hose but nothing is as good as that falling from the clouds. Showers of blessings INDEED! My squash plants are blooming. Yayy!
Already eating them? My earliest ones are about toonie-sized and green. They shall be orange, low acid ones. And the beefsteaks are behind them too.

@PoetryNEmotion yes. More for supper tonight. We are in the deep south USA so we have them start coming in right about now or before. And would have had tomatoes earlier than now if the weather had let us get the plants set out sooner. We even already have a couple of varieties of corn tasseling!
@sunni Very nice. I used to live in Texas. I miss the south. My mom was a farmer.

Seriously, I've lost count. I'll ask and let you know. Red ones and green ones. I click green ones on my phone and they turn red here!

Aww I love gardening..and fruit bearing plants 💚
sunni · 61-69, F
@Sepia me too! But I'm kinda a 'hit or miss' farmer. Thankfully I have quite a few 'hits'. I can even claim bragging rights to a LOVELY bunch of orchids I begged to grow. Ha..bought the little mangy plant on clearance years ago. It has been a true joy.

yum! I have a couple cherry tomato plants, but the tomatoes are still green yet.
sunni · 61-69, F
@Scribbles well, like I told my pals earlier, we suffer lots of sweat trade off for early tomatoes!
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@sunni That is true, I know feel like I'm constantly weeding and watering and everything. lol. But it pays off.

Everything I have is running a little late this year-I'm in charge of garden at work, and have a ton of plants in my apartment, and a neighbor and I share an outdoor garden space. (but I tend to mix in plenty of manure and peat and extra soil every year, so it always ends up as a bumper crop. With lots of extras to give away to friends or the local food pantry), because I had such a cold Spring by me. How early did you plant this year?
sunni · 61-69, F
Girl! You've got it going on!! I'm honestly not sure but we had tons of rain when we would have been setting the plants out. Couldn't even begin to get in the garden. So by the time it was finally dry enough to work it up, we were probably a month behind. But once it did dry up, the cash crops (soybeans, corn, hay) had to take precedence over the garden. Living according to the weather...endless. but I wouldn't have it any other way.
