What do you do to distract yourself from cutting?

I’m asking for my friend
Sweet517 · 51-55, F
One reason people cut is because they are so overwhelmed with emotional pain that they become numb. The physical pain of cutting serves to release endorphins and paradoxically, serves to calm the cutter down. Rubber bands are sometimes used on the wrists. The cutter snaps the band and inflicts pain without causing injury. I used this technique when I worked with cutters a number of years ago along with DBT. Good wishes for you and I am impressed by your good and supportive friendship

Keep your hands busy. Write, play an instrument or a video game, paint, pet your cat/dog/whatever. Just keep the razor out of your hands.

Their hands. Whatever.
@SW-User I agree. Keeping hands busy is the only thing that may work... and not always.

@DarkHeaven That’s the bitch, it’s not guaranteed effective.
@SW-User I really wish I had never started.

Wear rubber bands around your wrists , it helped my friend

Distraction is an important strategy.

But sooner or later there's a need to hit the real issues. I had 15 years of chronic depression. No idea how I survived. But I did. My life is brilliant now. It doesn't matter what happened to anyone, it shouldn't define us.

He or she needs to get help. The first two therapists for me were useless. The third one changed my life. Gotta be better to be fully alive than cutting - relieves the feelings for a moment but adds to a sense of worthlessness in the long run.
Play music, doodle, sing, write. Anything. But many times nothing will work. It’s a horrible demon.

@mikie24 I tell her not to but I think her sadness is just so loud sometimes

I am not the person to ask
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@nedkelly Yeah. Watch cricket probably wouldn't work for her. Roasted kiwi was nice, though. If they win they get excited, if they lose they say, yeah but our population is smaller. If multiply our score by the square root of the population difference and add your telephone number, we win every time.
