Does love really exist ?

or is that just a lie we tell each other over and over again in stories and movies to inspire for something greater that isnt even possible ?

It exists as much as any other emotion does. Yeah it's technically just chemicals in the brain making you feel that way, but knowing that doesn't make it go away and doesn't make it any less meaningful to me.

I don't know. It is true that men will die for their wives and gfs and children; and, mothers will die for their children. If that's not love, I don't know what is. Willfully letting go of the most important thing to you for someone else.

Maybe it's just being high. And sometimes people will kill themselves when they're high. Regardless, that is real, is it not? That feeling and the action are both real things.

That said, in the end, it's also true that we're mostly just animals looking to rut and fuck and eat and kill. And that we have our own particular evolutionary methods for being able to survive to repeat that process in infinity.

So. I don't know. The thing about humans is that we do have the capacity to examine ourselves and willfully refuse to engage in some of our baser instincts. So, perhaps it's also true that we have the capacity--if not the nature--to love, despite our baser natures, and in spite of ourselves.

Or perhaps those capable of that are few and far between, and our idea of love is simply a sad justification and rationalization to maintain our genetic line.

Perhaps our attachments to other people are fundamentally attachments to ourselves, via the benefits and advantages the other provides for our survival and comfort; so, when we lose them, we lose the advantages to ourselves. But that could also be considered a type of love, no?

So who knows. All I know is what feels good and what feels bad.

I’ve always loved what Anne Frank said about love:

“Love, what is love? I don't think you can really put it into words. Love is understanding someone, caring for him, sharing his joys and sorrows. This eventually includes physical love. You've shared something, given something away and received something in return, whether or not you're married, whether or not you have a baby. Losing your virtue doesn't matter, as long as you know that for as long as you live you'll have someone at your side who understands you, and who doesn't have to be shared with anyone else!”

Love is what you make it because it's unique to each of us. For some people? It's nothing more than fiction, but to others it couldn't be more real.

One word. Hormones.

Sometimes they might last for a lifetime. Others might last a couple hours or even a couple years.

Yes but no. Movies set you up to fail and imposes an unrealistic standard and expectation on people. Most people assume any problem is worth walking away from, because of what movies tell them. They walk around looking for a perfect person that doesn't exist, when really they have to do the work with the other person to create a sustainable relationship you both agree on and want.
it exists, but it does not exist in the way pop society would tell us. love is not possession, and it's not something that comes without work and heartache.
I believe in love. Though I have never been able to find romantic love with that one person of my dreams. I still believe in it. 🙂
Whyme · 46-50, M
I think it may but theres no definition just 2 people whose crazy dont clash often
Effloresce · 26-30, F
I believe it exists, so it does in my reality.
Milkshake · F
@Effloresce so its more a thing we want to be true and there for it is true but it doesnt exist on its own ?
Effloresce · 26-30, F
I suppose we don’t have the tools to fully understand it. I think if someone wants it to exist, than it does, but nah I guess there isn’t any proof that it actually exists @Milkshake
SW-User
I really want to believe it is a lie...
