It still effects them today and they end up having to see them because their families don't know about it. So it's dragged out over years and become an accepted part of their reality. It doesn't have to be though, your family would choose you over some friend any day.
Be brave and tell her, you can get help and start a path to closure then. You won't if you don't tell anyone, do you wanna see this piece of waste again or let them get away with this? Do it for you.
