How do you cope with silence?

greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
There is a lot of silence in my life. I do not cope with it, and the isolation, very well. I live in one quiet rented room in a quiet neighborhood. Don't have a CD player, don't have a TV, no real social life. Physically unhealthy, obese (working on that), teeth falling out, going deaf (saving for a hearing aid but just told I will need 2 of them)...What can I say? Not a great situation currently. Spent last year out of my comfort zone trying hard to make some new friends (my friends live hundreds or thousands of miles away or they've died). Last year was a disaster. Have decided to withdraw into my shell again, for now. Saving my money for a hearing aid (or two!) And a move to what I believe will be a better community.Meanwhile, the silence rules.

I turn on the radio.

Anything is better than sitting their an listening to myself breathe.

@User41 lol
Rokasu · 36-40, M
@User41 I never thought about listening to my breathing. Sounds spiritual.
SW-User
Absolute silence is novel at first but very quickly becomes disturbing, listening to your own breath, your blood flowing, heart beating. It made me feel incredibly insecure and fragile. I didn't cope very well at all.
Rokasu · 36-40, M
@SW-User it sounds euphoric to me. I never tried. Never thought to.
SW-User
@Rokasu that's what I thought, and to begin with it was, after 12 mins it wasn't for me. Im sure for those that are born profoundly deaf it's different, I do know those that become profoundly deaf do struggle psychologically.

I spend a lot of time in silence.
I have to cope with noise.
Rokasu · 36-40, M
@SW-User Uhhh, like techno music. Knowing you it’s probably more classical.
SW-User
@Rokasu 😂 I am not a classical music person. But I don't like to have music on all the time.
Sometimes the only sound is the sound of birds chirping.
Rokasu · 36-40, M
@SW-User Ah. Music is pretty much a part of me. I need some variation of it at all times. Even while reading.
I read a book or watch anime.
Rokasu · 36-40, M
@mindstruggle Can’t say I have, but they look interesting.
@Rokasu check it out. 😊
Rokasu · 36-40, M
@mindstruggle Will do!

I'll do my nails, my makeup, my hair, listen to music, read. Anything to keep me from being in total silence, for me it's not good idea, i start thinking negative.
Not well. I am too isolated.

So, I appreciate my MUSIC I love my Netflix and as an avid reader as I am, I am listening to an audio book *The Soul of the Octopus* by Sy Montgomery. NOT fiction. It is really astonishing and the real human VOICE narrating the book, all I can say is [c=#008099]WOW.[/c]

My first audio book ever. But in this case, I had a hunch it would be suitable and I was spot on.

I get out on my bike which basically IS my vehicle,
I go to movies in the theater, etc.

How do YOU cope with the silence? 🌺

I enjoy it. I rarely experience it. There’s always background noise
Autumnbreeze · 41-45, F
If the thoughts in my head are not noisy enough, I turn on the radio.
SW-User
I find something to read lol 🤓
Rokasu · 36-40, M
@SW-User If I grab a book I end up missing 6 hours of the day.
blendednotshaken · 51-55, M
cherish it.
