It really depends on the company. Many companies have policies where you earn so many vacation days for how long you've worked there, and give you a fixed amount of sick days per year. Once you have depleted your sick days, then they can deduct vacation days if you have sickness but no more sick days. I've worked for many companies that did something similar. You might try checking your employee handbook, or speaking with Human Resources to get a better answer for your company.

In some cases employers offer PTO, or paid time off. It is a combination of vacation days and sick days. If you use up all your sick days, you're using vacation days. If you don't use sick days you have extra vacation days.

@Madgirl Yeah, it depends on what your employer offers in terms of vacation/sick days.

@Madgirl That actually varies from company to company and state to state.

Not where I work. We get a certain amount of vacation time and a certain amount of sick leave per pay period, plus several personal days per year.

Seems most employers are moving to PTO - Personal Time Off. Your sick, vacation, whatever days are all named the same.

Not where I work. Only if you eat through your sick days do you have to use vacation.

no. they're separate. Sick days are scheduled. At least it was back in the day when I worked.

We do NOT get rewarded for NOT calling in Sick.
