"Nobody joins a cult." True?

I really believe this from observation.

I've even heard people say things like, "Oh, no, it's not a cult! That was the first thing I asked them and they said they're not."

My step mother belongs to a church which is a cult. She didn't know this when she joined. They suckered her in by helping her out when no-one seemed interested. Then she discovered that if she ever left the church she would have to give up her friends who still belong to it.
