About my surname

Like, ive been doing research on where my family could be from for SO long. But i cant figure it out really, like a few websites say my surname is most likely ghanaian or african, my surname is "Coffie". Can yall help me cuz i dunno if its african really.😅
Pineapple · 100+, F
Isn't coffee grown and made in Africa? Coffie seems like a derivative of coffee.
This might not make sense. I'm naturally blonde and high. Bye

@Pineapple: ahahah👍
GlassDog · 41-45, M
It's rare enough that I can't find much historical evidence in the censuses. Most likely it's an alternative spelling of Coffey, which gives you Irish roots.

If it's African, it would have to be recent. Most people who left Africa in the past would have been in the slave trade and given the surname of the slave owner.

@KingShaun: It's not especially uncommon, sadly.
PrinceOfSangra · 22-25, M
@GlassDog: true, but aye. Nows the question where in west africa my family comes from 😂😂 ancestry is tough af to trace
GlassDog · 41-45, M
@KingShaun: Really difficult, if not impossible, with African ancestry at various times in history. Good luck!
Deadcutie · 18-21, F
The sad fact is, unless you are direct ancestry to noble families, most people can only trace thier ancestry back to about the 1600s. before that people didn't keep records very well, most couldn't even read or write. Surnames were taken as occupations such as john carpenter , john the carpenter, or john smith, john the smith.
PrinceOfSangra · 22-25, M
@Deadcutie: oh. Well shit 😂😂
Deadcutie · 18-21, F
@KingShaun: everyone is in the same boat.. anyone who claims ansestery beyond that is likely using speculation and myth, not actual records.
PrinceOfSangra · 22-25, M
@Deadcutie: yeah i suppose your right ye
Amylynne · 26-30, F
well a few hundred years back there was not a lot of standardized spelling.
it may well mean
Coffee!
the question is when did your family leave africa,
if you HAVE an african last name you might not have been a part of "middle passage"
thank your lucky stars!
PrinceOfSangra · 22-25, M
@Amylynne: oh well i dunno tbh, could be that my family got their last name from irish or british slave masters idk
