Religion and mental illness go together like razor blades and lemon juice.

For real. The bible (or any religious text for that matter) should come with a warning label: "Do not read if prone to bouts of psychosis. Will result in powerful delusions that will hinder your quality of life and/or make you a danger to yourself and others"

I can agree to that, as someone who majored in religious studies in college. Religious texts are powerful in their ability to influence. This was part of the Catholic Church's argument against individual interpretation of the Bible during the Reformation. Without proper authoritative interpretation, they argued, the Bible can be used to support all kinds of unorthodox views, many of them dangerous.

That said, politics feeds similar delusions. And yet I can't label all who believe in outlandish political conspiracy theories "mentally ill". In that case they may simply be stupid. 🤦‍♂️

Live and let live. People can believe whatever they want. No need to mock their religion
Eternity · 26-30, M
@Spica yeah thats a cool sentiment but its the part where they shoot up hotels in mumbai or chain up children in basements that im concerned with.
DMDawson · 70-79, F
@Eternity And when they cover up molesting children while throwing homosexuals off rooves.
Eternity · 26-30, M
@DMDawson yes and that. The list is endless really.

We should just take religion and put it somewhere else. Like Venus.

@Eternity “Y’all”????
Eternity · 26-30, M
@cherokeepatti you're in no position to split hairs. Especially a hair this fine. Its a colloquialism.
G00GLE · 22-25, M
@cherokeepatti It's obvious religion is only a motivator used by the greedy warlords, but that really doesn't make it any better. Religion is a tool for rich people to control the masses.

I've felt for a long time that the Bible is a series of moral teachings delivered through analogies
DMDawson · 70-79, F
@JohnnyNoir I really think the bible is just metaphorical.
JohnnyNoir · 56-60, M
@DMDawson I think metaphors was the word I really needed to use. Good pickup!
DMDawson · 70-79, F
The bible should never be taken literally. My husband and I hypothesise that some of the stories were accounts of schizophrenic episodes or drug-induced hallucinations.
CheshireCatalyst · 36-40, M
Yeah nobody with schizophrenia ever has delusions that they work in a mall. They're always Jesus.
Anyone can be a danger to themself and others. What use to justify it does not change the intent
