What exactly is fake news and why do they create it?

GerOttman · 61-69, M
First off, fake news has been around for a very long time. This is nothing new. Back in the day, newspapers made most of their money from advertising, the more popular the paper was the more they could charge for ads and they sold more ads. Fake news, usually sensational, sold newspapers. Feel good stories about puppy rescues and barn raising don't sell as well as sexual innuendo and lurid murders. Most fake news takes just the smallest shred of truth and twists it into something completely unrecognizable, then peddles it as gospel fact. It's an old an dishonorable tradition!

Fake news is stories or complete hoaxes created to deceive the reader
/viewer.

It's different from a story being presented with bias.

Let's take some examples today. In the British press there is a story about how much the labour party will spend if the win the election. This has been deliberately started by their opponents the Conservative party.

However the figure quoted is not true since the Labour haven't published their actual manifesto. It assumed all policies are in full swing from day one and it makes gross assumptions.

Sensible reporting would be "The Conservatives claim....
However this only would be true if.... Etc". You've reported the claim but indicated potential flaws.

Fake news would be "Labour will spend £1 trillion in government".

You're making sound like it is true and verified. You've not indicated it is actually a claim by the Conservatives etc etc .

They've always been fake. Flat out lies. Hearst fanned the flames of war, crashed the hemp paper industry, drove the price of wood pulp up after he owned a huge share of US lumber rights,.........................
..

. and kept quiet while JD Rockefeller, the Royals, and the Dutch took over the whole oil industry, Spread IBM, Ford Motors, Cocacola business into pre war Europe, concealed the horrors of the Imperial Japanese war criminals, the despotic crimes of our own CIA against mentally ill people, nuclear testing on US population centers, syphilis disease infliction on prison populations, the criminal behavior of the long lived (now zombie) press is legendary.

If you want to look into it. Makes me want to vomit how much trust I used to have for it.

Fake news is a term coined by President Trump to express his dislike of 'anti-Trump' stories in the media.....without ever actually calling them lies.

Imho, "fake" news is created to distract the general public from what is really happening

Anything that Trump doesn't like, and because the truth still needs to get out.

Lies , because they can and somebody will believe and spread it around as fact

Ask Rupert Murdoch, he’s an expert with that sort of creativity.
