How Do You Go About Comforting Others?

Do you like to cheer them up, let them feel the emotions, give them space, or remind them it could always be worse? Something else?

I always aim for validating the person's feelings. I'm defo more on the side of letting a person have their emotions without trying to cheer them up or minimize because I believe it's important to experience emotions instead of bottling them up.

@SW-User Yeeeeees, that's a good approach.

I try to remember this while I listen.

How I feel

Did you happen
to look at the world
with my eyes,
so you could inform me
wherein beauty lies?
Does the sound that you hear
fall on my ear?
Do you know the message
that my word implies?
Do you speak with my mouth?
Do you feel with my skin?
Did I lend you my essence
without and within?
Does my logic tell you
what's false or what's real?
that's why you can't say
that you know how I feel!

Listen to them. Not judging them. Trying to understand their pain.

Be there for them. Find out what they need from me.
@HannahSky finding out what they need is a really solid idea. "What can I do?" as opposed to just going "let me know if there is anything I can do." :) Avoids putting pressure on the person.

@Perspectivedetective definitely and let's the person know you know they can say what they need.
