Do you also suffer from Imposter Syndrome like I do?

Imposter Syndrome (n): The persistent inability to believe that one's success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one's efforts or skills.
Sorta. I have trouble between productivity and the brains reward response.
@SW-User *cuddles you*
SW-User
@SW-User 🤤
SW-User
I pretty much live my life assuming that everyone's just being nice and I'm not actually good at much of anything but people are too polite to tell me so.
SW-User
@SW-User I know how you feel 🤗 I hope you change the way you see yourself someday.
I don't have the inability, I have not only the ability to believe my success is deserved or has been achieved as a result of my efforts or skills, but my value, as well.
@SW-User LOL 🤪😂 (This is so hysterical.) No! Not at all. I'm FOUND! (I'm still blind as a bat, though.)
Yes! I have the ability, and have interpreted my success and value as coming from the results of my efforts and skills. That's how the imposter syndrome would be expressed with me because my effort and skills have nothing to do with my success. Does that help? 🤔
SW-User
@PhoenixPhail You have to understand imposter syndrome for the way it is. You can't see it however you want :P otherwise what good does its definition do?
@SW-User I DO understand imposter syndrome as it is. According to Wikipedia, "Impostor syndrome (also known as impostor phenomenon, impostorism, fraud syndrome or the impostor experience) is a psychological pattern in which an individual doubts their accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a "fraud." I'm in complete agreement with this definition, which differs from YOUR definition. The definition you've presented is based on the premise; "that one's success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one's efforts or skills."

I don't define my success by any degree of quality or quantity of anything I've done, but by my alignment with my True Being. Defining my success by the results of my efforts and skills, would be being OF this world, not IN it. I do not doubt my accomplishments resulting from my efforts or skills in this physical, time/space reality. However, those accomplishments are by no means a measure of my success - my alignment with my True Being, and in fact, have proven to be impediments and road blocks to my attaining true alignment. Furthermore, IF you are basing ones success on the products of one's accomplishments resulting from efforts and skills, your definition clearly states imposter syndrome as the INability to recognize that success. The only way that success can be achieved, is through the ability to perceive their success is deserved or legitimately achieved as a result of one's efforts or skills. Not the INability.
SW-User
No, but we did a workshop thing with minority Stanford med and pre-med students about it. Apparently it's pretty common. Personally, I feel like I'm incapable sometimes, but when I see other people being complete, total dumbasses, I realise that I'm not THAT stupid.
SW-User
@SW-User 😆 I can relate to that
SW-User
I know you suffer from this, Alex. I've known you a long time and we've been extremely close. I hope you trust me and believe me when I say to you your success is yours and you've earned what you've accomplished so far. Your talent is limitless and I know you'll achieve so much more.

All of it will be yours to enjoy and you deserve it all. I want the best for you and you deserve it because of who you are. Know this.
SW-User
@SW-User 🤗 Thank you
SW-User
@SW-User welcome my dear Alex 🤗
caccoon · 36-40
I constantly feel like I'm tricking people, but... I kinda feel like I really am. It sucks, I guess.
caccoon · 36-40
@SW-User Kinda! But I feel like it's pretty real, so I feel weird even writing it.
caccoon · 36-40
I guess it's just human, though. 💙
SW-User
@caccoon It must be it 🤗
SW-User
It will change as you get older.

Many of those people who were so willing to “toot their horn” don’t credit all the people who helped them along.

I do nothing alone. My success is due to so many things and the great people around me.
SW-User
@SW-User I never take all the credits, but then I never take any credit. I do hope that it'll change when I get older although I don't know how that's going to play out.
SW-User
@SW-User don’t change. The world needs more of you.
SW-User
@SW-User 🤗 You're so kind to say that
You mean you have that thing as some people bitching about failing a test and then they have an Aplus score?
That's really bad to have, I guess.
SW-User
@blooblookookoo Lol I wish it was as simple as taking a deep breath and relaxing
@SW-User I know it is hard to only say it, but facts and evidence so far have proven you beyond doubt that you are only moaning about failing and then you go and you get an A+, A+...
So, don't trust me, don't even trust yourself overanalyzing yourself, just trust your evidence.
SW-User
@blooblookookoo That's a good advice, but I need to get myself out of my head first.
Quizzical · 46-50, M
I think I've always had something like this as I've never really had to make any effort at anything...

popmol · 22-25, M
not sure, don't think so, i'm just desperate for a good job
popmol · 22-25, M
@SW-User i do. i've grown up with constant criticism, justified and unjustified, just so they shouldn't give a compliment also just remarks. everythign has been taken out of my hands and then told i do nothing. so i started doing nothing so the only mistake i can ever make is doing nothing, i'm now living a depression and i'm autistic so a nice smile and a nod or somethign isn't saying to me good job.
SW-User
@popmol I think you have a bit of imposter syndrome after all then 😯
popmol · 22-25, M
@SW-User i do? i just need to hear it so i'm sure.

I think that pretty much everyone has that at some time in their life.. sometimes for longer or shorter periods.. but I think most of us have had it
SW-User
@Adaydreambeliever You're maybe correct. I think everyone's had their ups and downs regarding their self-confidence and insecurity.

@MalteseFalconPunch I hope it goes away for you eventually 🤗
SW-User
SW-User
@SW-User that’s not necessarily true Alex. And you may not see everything they may or actually may not give...
You need only focus on yours
SW-User
@SW-User One of my worst habits is that I keep comparing myself with other people 😅 It's not something I can get rid of overnight, but I'm trying my best to overcome it.
SW-User
@SW-User all of us do that to certain degrees...
And trying your best is all you can do. But recognize for yourself that you do
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
I wouldn't believe my own name if I didn't have a drivers license.
SW-User
@DunningKruger Lol really?
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
@SW-User Do you know me?
SW-User
@DunningKruger No, that's why I asked
No, I’m quite proud of what I’ve achieved. It took everything I had. Im not sure who or what else I’d credit for it.
SW-User
@LithiumDrop That's a good and rational way to see it, I think.
GoodoldBob · 61-69, M
I didn't until just recently
SW-User
@GoodoldBob Maybe it's a sign of old age?
GoodoldBob · 61-69, M
@SW-User That's what scares me
SW-User
@GoodoldBob 🤗 There's nothing wrong with it!
firefall · 61-69, M
I think everyone with an above average IQ does, more or less
SW-User
@firefall Interesting. Why is that?
firefall · 61-69, M
@SW-User I'm not sure, but I think because we're smart enough to project ourselves into others' shoes, and consequently overestimate others
SW-User
@firefall That makes sense, I guess. But then intelligence doesn't necessarily equal mental issues.
Disposal · 36-40, M
Hm. I think I need a adult mature person to explain it to me
SW-User
@Disposal 😆 But you're an adult!
Disposal · 36-40, M
@SW-User 😐 mind blown....
SW-User
SW-User
Yes, Ive been waiting to get found out for 40 years.
SW-User
@SW-User But maybe you do deserve it but your mind just tricks you into not believing so?
SW-User
@SW-User I think there's a lot of luck involved, certainly for me anyway.
SW-User
@SW-User 🤗
LookingForIt987 · 51-55, M
Yes! For both of my jobs! God, it sucks so damn much!
SW-User
@LookingForIt987 I'm sorry you have to deal with it. Do you ever think it's because you haven't found the right job for yourself yet?
LookingForIt987 · 51-55, M
@SW-User That's a good question. 🤔 The smartass in me says it's just because I'm neurotic and need constant approval. :) Putting that jerk off to the side, though... I think the answer for each is different.

My "day" job is as a computer programmer. I'm going to get laid off next Spring - but it's in my financial interest to stay until that happens. I've been here over 16 years now - 17+ by the time the layoff happens. My skills are older - objectively, quite portable but still older. So ever since I learned about it, I've had to fight off the constant terror that I won't be able to find a job at all.

I've also done some freelance writing in the past. (Haven't in a while due to health issues I deal with sapping my energy.) In that case, the jerk in the first paragraph could be right. I never felt like I was a "real" writer - even though I probably have 75+ credits to my name, including some editing work. I can't write fiction, see, so therefore I'm not a "real" writer. And other people have written more than me in this particular field, so therefore I'm not a "real" writer. And on and on and on...

Dealing with it for my day job is mostly new, but I'll tackle it the same way I tackled it for my freelance work. I'll tell that guy to STFU and sit down somewhere out of the way, and dig in to get started. :)
SW-User
@LookingForIt987 Yeah you tell that guy to STFU lol. Constant approval is nice. It does boost your confidence level whether you want to admit that or not. But it's just a temporary relief compared to your own approval of yourself. 🤗 You can absolutely suppress this imposter syndrome. Each of us is in a battle with ourselves. It's a matter of not giving up and keeping a positive attitude.
SW-User
Nah. I really do manage to do ok by sheer luck, in spite of my sheer incompetence 🤡
SW-User
@SW-User You know that really makes me wonder if any of my achievements was earned by luck or by my own efforts.
SW-User
Nah, if I earn something I've earned it.
SW-User
@SW-User 🤗 I'm glad for you. It's not a good feeling when you feel like a failure all the time.
SW-User
[c=#BF0000]Nope. I feel happy if I achieve the tiniest thing[/c]
SW-User
@SW-User 🤗 That's great
SW-User
I avoid this by being a failure.

@SW-User Lol

I had it pretty bad when I did web development.
SW-User
@DDonde Do you feel happier now without it?
DDonde · 31-35, M
@SW-User Yes and no. It was a huge relief at the time.
But I've struggled with money ever since.
SW-User
@DDonde I think you can still find your way back to the top without it 🤗 Sometimes a big success requires the sacrifice of a smaller success.
MartinTheFirst · 22-25, M
Well we're young alex. Name one thing we've earned?
SW-User
@MartinTheFirst Come on, give yourself some credits
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
Oh I do a lot
SW-User
@basilfawlty89 I'm sorry to hear that. I think it stems from our lack of confidence and faith in ourselves.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@SW-User probably, I always I assume I'm faking my skills
SW-User
@basilfawlty89 I always assume I'm just a lucky biatch 😂
