Not a Question BUT the prison system really irks me sometimes.

I hate the tragic cycle most people face in the USA. It seems as if once you are in the system there is little hope to get you fully recovered. Prison is more about punishment than rehabilitation which just makes people getting out of prison harder to stay out. Like most jobs wont hire you if you are a criminal yet you need a job in order to keep up your parole. I understand that people make wrong choices but for petty crimes it seems as if we are just making people more messed up instead of helping them get better.

100% agree. And the privatization of prisons has made things much worse. It's a business to keep them filled.

@Peaceful Exactly. Especially since in some places people make choices in desperate situations then get punished severely and sent to prison making their life 100x more difficult

@newdawnnewday the three strikes you're out law is bs, too.
So are sentences over being caught with weed. But it's big business here...and worse.

And they did a program for inmates that taught transcendental meditation. It was overwhelmingly successful. You know what the prison did? Discontinued the program.

Prison has nothing to do with rehabilitation.

Prisons are not set up to deal with situations that caused someone to be put in one. They are inhumane. All they care is if your breathing and have a pulse.

Prison was never intended to rehabilitate anyone. It’s punishment for committing a crime and is horrible so you think “fuck that shit” and you don’t commit another crime because you know prison is horrible.

@xixgun Thats just a really oversimplified version. The point of prison is to make sure people dont go back, thats true, but how are we suppose to do that when being inside the prison system messes you up even more? Living each day like an animal can surely cause more harm than good to someone's pysche. if prison rehabilitated their members, such as making sure their time in there is used wisely for finding jobs and teaching them life skills they otherwise didnt have, people wouldnt be going back to prison as much. Also, if someone were to disrupt their parole for things out of their control then they are at risk of going back to prison when it could have been avoided in the first place if people actually cared about treating prisoners instead of punishing them for making the wrong choices. (obviously, i am not talking about major crimes like murder).

Home arrest would be less costly.
