Is it cheaper to build/repair a motorcycle than it is to buy one?

Just curious
Viper · M
Vehicles are one of the oddities were the parts apart can be more valuable/expensive than the completed item.

So unless you know what your doing, or get lucky, building a vehicle can get more expensive.

Though brand new ones can be expensive too.

So if simply looking for cheap, I'd look for used complete models.

Also what type of motorcycle are we talking about?
I think it depends on the model and year.
No it'll cost more. You don't really know what your buying and you don't know what else is wrong with it till you taken it all apart to put back together.

Could cost you double in the long run and your life if it isn't done right 😬

@Teggy This is one of those "If you have to ask..." sort of things. And yeah, the risk is very real.

The whole "if you do it yourself you'll know it was done right" principle applies when you're wrenching on bikes, but you have to know how to do it right.
@QuixoticSoul I agree with you completely.

@QuixoticSoul @Teggy not a problem. I have the know how. Just was curious about which would be more pricey 😋

Will you do the work yourself?

@SW-User Bikes aren't really like cars when it comes to parts. You'll simply be buying OEM (or used) parts 99% of the time. Generics hardly exist - while aftermarket consumables (gaskets, etc) are just a bad idea.

Part availability varies dramatically with the manufacturer. I was absolutely amazed that the local BMW dealer had a mirror for my 20 year old RT in stock. Most manufacturers only make/stock the rubber bits for their older models.

@QuixoticSoul As they aren't as popular I imagine... Now at the same time with the right bike I imagine there is people collecting parts and holding them.

@SW-User Yeah, that's us stupid masochistic fuckers with old bikes who are anxious about part availability, so we stock up on 30-old parts, because we know which ones are inexplicably rare 😂
[c=#359E00]amateur opinion : making things by ourself always sounds cheaper to me[/c]

build a harley, no;

build a "honda davidson", possibly...

as far as sportbikes, better off to buy a descent one owner used one; they depreciate in value quicker than anything, and not really worth spending much for repairs on

You either buy a new motorcycle all at once, or you buy it one piece at a time.
