Is it better to be cremated rather than buried?

Now a days more people are being cremated rather than buried, I used to think that cremation was horrible but lately i think it is far better, when you think it is a cleaner process and it saves space, after all our bodies are completely inflammable.I had arranged a few years ago to be buried but now have changed my mind, what are the views of SW folks.

I would much rather be cremated than buried. I used to think burial was the way to go. But, I have seen several friends and loved ones choose cremation. My husband and I both discussed it and we have chosen cremation.

In Hindu religion they always cremate. They believe that this will help their soul to escape quickly from the body.

Hindus believe in the soul being indestructible; and that death symbolises end of the existence of a person's physical being, but the start of a new journey for the soul. This soul then reincarnates in some other life form, and passes through the same cycle of taking birth, growing and eventually meeting death- only to begin the cycle afresh. Cremation of a person's dead body is therefore, supposed to rid the departed soul of any attachments to the body it previously resided in.

It burns away everything until nothing remains. On the other hand, burying is a very slow process of dissolving the five elements inside the body back into the five elements of the cosmos.

Fire is considered holy in Hinduism. Also, a traditional belief among Hindus says that a person's body is composed of 5 elements(earth, fire, water, air and sky) of cosmos. The cremation ceremonies of Hindus are directed towards returning the body to these elements. The body is progressively returned to earth, air, sky and fire by burning it under skies; and the ashes are respectfully collected and poured in a river.

By cremating the body, the physical remnants of the ghost are entirely wiped out from the face of earth, so that the ghost may continue with its journey forward after the 11 days.

A Human Being does not always die from old-age, he may die due to diseases. If he is burnt, the micro-organisms in his body will die (no pathogen survives at the temperature of fire). Thus, burning of a body after a person is dead ensures that you are not committing murder, and also you are preventing it from being a source of spread of any disease.

It is said that excessive mourning over a deceased prevents the soul from being completely detached from its loved ones, and keeps it from undertaking its new journey- that of taking up a new life. Cremation (and subsequent ceremonies in mourning) help to remove most of those things that can act as a reminder for the person's existence, and thereby also assist the family in getting over the loss.

Sorry for the long answer, and thanks for the read.
I've read it can make it easier for your soul to cross to the other side. Like sometimes you might keep coming back to your body to visit it and it can make you sad. Personally I want to be cremated so I don't end up in a museum in the far future or something. The irony of the Pharaohs and their mausoleums being designed to keep them from being disturbed, well, disturbs me.
I feel that it's an incredibly personal choice when it comes to deciding what happens to your remains after death.

I'd also find it difficult to say which option would use up less space in some respects... mainly due to the fact that we don't have many of the same options that are available in other parts of the world that would enable us to store more cremains in a smaller amount of space in a way that would be respectful to the dead while still being attractive to the eye of any visiting relative who may wish to pay their respects. While an urn does take up a smaller amount of space, it can be restrictive if you decide that you want to be laid to rest with your partner or another family member. With a burial, you do have that option.

Thanks to more environmental awareness, burials have also become more environmentally friendly than they've ever been with more funeral homes offering biodegradable coffins. Crematoriums sometimes offer an option of a biodegradable urn that will feed a tree as it breaks down, too.

Personally speaking, I'd like to see more choices offered for both burials and cremations - such as the option to request seeds be placed on the grave in lieu of flowers... native seeds would be kinder to the environment than some of the expensive flower displays currently widely available and they'd last longer than a few weeks as well as being attractive to look at.

Cremations where the deceased is placed in a graveyard still takes up more space than necessary for my liking and I'd like to see that improved on.

@HootyTheNightOwl I wasn't thinking about burying ashes just being scattered to the 4 winds.

idk i have issues with burning a body. I get that it鈥檚 dead. There鈥檚 just something about burning a human that just doesn鈥檛 sit right with me.
SW-User
@DoubleRings Well it doesn't really matter after we are dead what happens to our body and it certainly saves space in cemetaries.
DoubleRings51-55, F
i know but it still seems like burning a human body isn鈥檛 right. that doesn鈥檛 help me think of it more positively. @SW-User
SW-User
@DoubleRings Well we still have a choice and that is the main thing, if you are happy to be buried that is fine,my mother and father were buried and i felt better about it at the time, i would have been more distressed if they had been cremated.

My parents were cremated and my husband and I will follow suit. Cheaper and less stressful for loved ones. But my mother in law had a full blown funeral. It cost $10,000. Ridiculous!!!!!

@SW-User that鈥檚 a lot! Hope cremation is much less
SW-User
@Love4All It is way cheaper!

Personally if I have it my way I want my body put in an interplanetary space probe and be blasted to another galaxy
SW-User
@SW-User Well maybe when we have no space here on earth for anything it might be an option馃槢

Cremated and my ashes thrown in the ocean or anywhere
SW-User
@Love4All Yes i would like my ashes to be scattered to the 4 winds.

I think the best way to decide is on the basis of which would be worse if they get it wrong and I鈥檓 not actually dead. On that basis I鈥檇 probably pick burial as I might be able to dig my way out and burning to death would be very painful.
Cremation is less expensive.
A grave site is only a place to mourn, so why not make it more convenient. They can do whatever they wish with my ashes.
