What's your general rule for when to give up on something?

It can be a relationship, a job, a hobby, or something else. Do you have a rule for when enough is enough?

@Pianist1234 But that's my point: a personal rule is still a rule. In my example (I've never done cocaine) I want the drugs. My will is to have the drugs, but because I have a personal rule, I don't do them.

This is why I think we agree. I think people should follow their own will, but they should also follow rules, because what we wish for is not always good for us.

In this way, what you say, that you either ignore others or listen to them, is false. You can and should do both. You should ignore negative rules, and follow positive ones.

I thank you for your perspective! The conversation helped me grow.

I follow my parents' best aphorism.

The crummier the country the more expensive the visa.

The metaphor means that when dealing with something is awful - like a job, or a hobby, or a relationship - it's often not worth the bother.

@CountScrofula I like that advice! Good thing I'm not from a shithole country!

@SW-User lol! A friend told it to them when they found out how much a visa to Burkina Faso cost.

I seem to have a checklist:
1. Ignore my gut.
2. Ignore my gut.
3. Ignore my gut.
4. Watch my world collapse around me.
5. Acknowledge that my gut was right as I pick up the pieces.

It's not the best, but it works.
Eventually. 😝

@ImpeccablyImperfect I'm no mathematician, but it looks like you can simplify that process by cutting out a few steps at the beginning. ;)

@SW-User My gut says I should agree with you
😀

Too toxic and my presence is of no benefits.
SW-User
@Miram That's a really healthy answer! Good job, buddy!

I just learnt better. You can't fix everything. But you can minimize the damages
SW-User
@Miram What, you don't find the "brooding tortured soul" thing super sexy?
When faced with cheaters. It makes no sense to even try when the outcome is decided long before. That’s why they’re called cheaters and not upstanding citizens.

@MsAnnThropy That's really good advice, actually. I tend to deal with cheats, because I hold out hope that they'll change.

SW-User
@Sarabee Well, I have to admire that dedication. XD

When it has no utility
SW-User
@JimboSaturn I'm a utilitarian too, but how do you measure that?
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@SW-User well the utility could just be because "I want to prove that I can do it"
im not a utility guy either
coolboy86 · 36-40, M
if its too hard
SW-User
@coolboy86 How hard is too hard?
caccoon · 36-40
Uhm, that applies to all of those things? I guess when I'm no longer interested for a specific reason(s).
SW-User
@caccoon I know, it's hard to come up with a rule that applies to all those things. I was just curious to what degree people gave up on things on a whim, or how much stress it takes for people to call it quits with regard to a specific thing.
caccoon · 36-40
@SW-User That's fair! There were some interesting answers, so it's a good question. :)
