Does Freedom of Speech really give you the right to insult someone personally?

It seems many use "Freedom of Speech" as "right" to INSULT people personally.

In the South African Contitution one may have the right to say whatever you want and voice your opinion, yes.... BUT that does NOT give you the right to INSULT someone personally as this is a DIRECT violation of the constitution itself as an INSULT is in contravension of Section 10 which states “Everyone has inherent dignity and the right to have their dignity respected and protected.”

Yes, insulting someone based on their own opinions/beliefs/faith/religion/political views... or WHATEVER... is unconstitutional thus Freedom of Speech cannot be used as a defence or excuse.

Please do THINK before you decide to insult anyone personally and try to use Freedom of Speech as a defence?

Basically practice Common Courtesy to all... is that really too much to ask for?

@iMystery Nou wat van Desember maand?

It's sad when people will be calling Freedom of Speech as an excuse for bullying others. Unfortunately it seems being the trend, name calling instead of building up their reasoning around a topic.

I don't think it should attract any kind of penalty from the government, but just because you can doesn't mean you should.

@SW-User There you go! 👏

Yep... here in the USA .....but it also gives the person the right to attack you physically for that insult ... 😁

Freedom of speech gives you the right to an opinion but there is no excuse for not voicing it respectfully..

One should be able to take an insult. Freedom of speech should allow people to insult each other if they want to. The problem is what is an insult to you might not be an insult to me.
SW-User
Yes actually it is . 3/4 of America would be under arrest for directing personal insults at Donald Trump. 😂

@SW-User So I am coming to learn lol.

I think a good rule of thumb when speaking with people is: always show respect or never disrespect people.

@Andrew19EightyFive True my fellow South African 👍.

All freedom of speech is to demonstrate your belief, opinion and organize w/o the gov. Intervention.

Everything else is open season.

many people see it as a "freedom TO" (free to speak/insult etc) and not "freedom FROM" (the right not to be insulted/harrassed...)
