What are your thoughts on pedophilia?

I think pedophiles need help. If someone has thoughts of young children, but doesn't act on those feelings, does that make him or her a bad person? No. Because they struggle with these feelings and choose not to act on it. Those that do need to be imprisoned. Those that don't, they need therapy, they need some form of counseling and help.

@SINAI No, but a majority of people, once they feel sexual attraction...they just really want sex. I'm not sure there are many twenty year olds who want to date a ten year old and not expect to have sex with them.

I'll be damned if I allow any grown man or woman to go near any child in my family with the intent of having sex. @beckychandler Nobody's "tolerating" the pedophiles who harm children. Those need to be locked up. But people need to be more understanding of the pedophiles who haven't done anything wrong, and don't want to! Imagine liking young children, and not being able to stop yourself from having those thoughts. That makes you a pedophile. But as long as you don't act on those feelings, you are not a child predator, and therefore not a terrible person. Because one can't change how they feel, but they can control their actions.

@ManicMicah Some things are objectively wrong, whether you act on them or not (and pedophiles have a high propensity to act on their sick fantasies). "Tolerating" this stuff only encourages these individuals to keep fantasizing about raping little boys and diddling little girls --there is no good reason to encourage individuals to have these thoughts. What they should be doing is working to rid their minds of these sick fantasies -- and society should help these people by telling them that they don't have the freedom to enjoy this stuff -- their porn is illegal and we don't want to hear about it.

@beckychandler That's what I'm trying to say, pedophiles need help. The ones who don't act on their feelings, they still need help. It does no good to keep it hidden either. We treat pedophiles so badly, they're scared to even ask for help! Some pedophiles, the ones who don't do a damn thing with someone younger than 18, can be some of the nicest people you'll ever meet, but they just so happened to get stuck with a sick and twisted sexual orientation.

The verdict on this is controversial. In today's society sexual relationship with children is not a norm, hence the aversion. Tomorrow, if sex between men and women is considered taboo, we will be having similar discussion.
