To those who speak a second language

My Spanish level is high intermediate. I'm embarrassed to say that even though I've studied off and on for years I cannot say that I'm fluent. I can read anything easily. I've tried so hard but I just cannot understand spoken words unless I concentrate so hard that my head hurts or only when its spoken rather slowly and deliberately.
When did the point come for you that you could totally understand your second language at normal pace without having to think about the words?
Is anymore progress possible at my age?

for 20 years I was able to survive in spanish (my third language) because I've traveled a lot in Latin countries, usually for a few months each trip. since almost a year I have a spanish speaking girlfriend and I have learned more in the last months than in my whole life before that. spanish in itself, as you already know, is a fairly easy language but the hard part is understanding them when they speak because they speak so damn fast. I think the only way to become fluent is immersion and relationships, then you get into the every day conversation and slowly get used to the speed at which they speak. I understand my girlfriend most of the time ( because she tries to speak slower and pronounce well) but other people are still hard to understand, but I'm getting there.

@reflectingmonkey Seems unanimous. I need immersion but I can't wait. I need simulated immersion now.

@REMsleep maybe you can make some spanish friends online and video chat with them. I was just thinking, you say you live somewhere with a lot of spanish speaking people and many who dont speak english (and probably wana learn). partner up with people who want to learn english. one conversation in english, the other in spanish and you alternate. something like that. i just think there might be potential for something mutually helpful.

@Underconstruction Thank you I hope so and I also agree. Its hard to find a way. I have money now but no time. I will one day. I was able to quickly read your post without looking anything up but if spoken I would be lost.
I'm the same way with Spanish. I have an easier time reading the written words than understanding spoken words. I think it comes with a lot of practice, hearing it frequently.

@midnightrose I've been watching Spanish TV regularly for the past 4 years always staying current with at least 1 show to assist with it.
@REMsleep How about having conversations?

@midnightrose Some years ago I tried a paid webcam site and then a free one. Maybe I should try again.

at some point your brain wires itself not remember but to understand the words..and it becomes easier. thing is in order to re wire your brain you need to be submerged into that language. music..books..movies the more your mind comes across these things the more it starts to create new neural paths.

Immersion. I'm now living in Guatemala and even though I studied and listened to spanish channels, being here really makes a difference.

Go live in another country? My high school Spanish got a big boost. But now it is shrinking again. Panama. Affordable.
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@FlowersNButterflies Yea that has been my ultimate goal now for a long while but I keep having to put it off. I actually have a rental property about 5 miles from the border with Mexico and I do get to use my Spanish occasionally but last week a woman in one of the border towns could not understand something that I tried to say to her and I got frustrated with myself. She could not speak English so it was really embarrassing to study that long at then fail when I needed it. I felt so confident right before that encounter.

@REMsleep I wonder if there are Spanish language chat rooms?
Wiseacre · F
Of course it is possible, but not without time and effort!

Hang out with native speakers!@REMsleep
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@Wiseacre I live in Texas. At least 1/3 of the people that I know are fluent in Spanish but friends and acquaintances don't like to be bothered with giving lessons while relaxing I have found. Some will help you occasionally but most just want to hang out.
I guess I stopped asking anyone I know long ago plus lately I'm not very close with a Spanish speaker. My could ask my cousins wife but I feel strange.

Where there is a will, there is a way!@REMsleep
