"Intelligence without ambition is like a bird without wings." What's your take on the meaning of this saying?

ethereal · F Best Comment
The saying means that intelligence without ambition doesn’t take you far.
The question is how far one wants to go? And what is ‘far’, just like what is success?
I am not ambitious, have never been. I was made to think that to have ambition is good, but i just dont want to be ambitious. I am happy and content to be where i am, i dont need more, ‘more’ is illusory because we ourselves define that more and it never gets fulfilled, even if it does get fulfilled, there is always the next ‘more’.
I’d rather be a bird without wings. There was a bird Moa which didn’t have wings, but humans made it extinct by hunting. Nature has rare examples too, but humans cannot control their greed, or they don’t know when to be content.

It seems to assume that there is no value in being intelligent but sitting still, rather than going forward. I would beg to differ. Could depend on the situation :-) *shrug*

@hartfire For sure. And there are so many different *kinds* of intelligence.

@hartfire edit: *kinds, not kids lol
@SW-User Indeed! :)
I put intelligence into roughly broad categories:
logical (analytical, mathematical & musical),
creative (lateral & synthesising),
practical (includes technical)
linguistic,
visual-spatial,
and proprioceptive.

I don't regard intelligence as one thing, but as the integrated sum of many hundreds of microskills.
I see it as a potential in all babies born relatively normal and healthy, and subsequently nurtured by environment - i.e. plastic, continually developing and changing and not a fixed quantity.

If one were to define it as one thing, I'd say it is the ability to recognise patterns and use that information to solve problems or invent new things or processes.

I agree but sometimes that bird just needs to lay low, observe and heal her wings before it’s able to take off in flight again 🤍
@SW-User For sure; a bird's intelligence involves far more than just wings.

Without ambition your intelligence won't take you anywhere.
@SW-User Would you count getting to the general store to buy groceries as an ambition? I mean, how we get there involves amazing things - memorising a maze, understanding the road rules and social behaviours, having the means of transport and all that's involved with maintaining it.
Could we count all motives as forms of ambition?
Worse though might be ambition with NO intelligence!

I've never heard that saying before.
@Crazychick Neither had I, which was what prompted me to ask the question.
I came across the saying a Belgian crime-mystery film.
But I've subsequently discovered that the saying is widely thought to be a quote from Salvador Dali. On hearing that, it suddenly makes sense. Only a provocative surrealist artist could think like that and not see the flaws in the thought.

The question is why don't they have an ambition?
They might need some help.

@hartfire damn. Like gimme some of your brain y'all. I'm really struggling.
@assemblingaknob Brains are like muscles. They grow with practise; the precise kinds of practise make all the difference.
assemblingaknob · 26-30, F
@hartfire that's only true to a certain extent. Everyone has their own limits :(

Right now... My condition is same!
@AngelKrish I'm not sure what you mean.

@hartfire I am intelligent but these days i am ambition less!

You the car, but no gas. 🤷‍♂️ you're not going anywhere .

Probably no ambition but has goals.

They seem to highly value ambition.
@DDonde Yes. Odd that. As if ambition without any guiding or limiting factor is a good thing. I'd say intelligence can work very effectively with or without ambition.
