My friend is always depressed and likes to hear what he wants to, like words of encouragement, "You're right, they're wrong" instead of "Toughen up! Thas life, you're just sensitive!" (he admits being sensitive).
So the secret, he been this way nearly 8 years and since last year I started feeding him beans (lies)! Like "I feel sorry that happened" or "That is outrageous!" Even though I never mean any of that! My true feelings' "You're being silly/ childish. Why don't you toughen up?" He thinks am that understanding when I don't mean it... In short I say the things he wants to hear. Falsehood.

@REMsleep I guess. But our other friend literally tells him as it is and, being sensitive, he gets really upset n lets it bother him. For two yrs we gave him advice how to cope with depression and life but has zero affect on him. He won't even attempt to make a change. So other friend speaks the truth and I pamper him.
