Is 73 too old to go to work part time as an indoor fork lift truck driver?

I am a woman from a long lived family, I live in southern California, am in basically good health, and I take no regular meds.
rottenrobi · 56-60, F
Never too old! I just got a job trenching and digging holes. If you're body and mind can do it, there's nothing that should stop you.
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@rottenrobi Wow! Is it a permanent job? How did you get it? I am still building up stamina after an illness and an accident kept me down for a while, but doing better every day and starting to feel like I could go back to work. There are a lot of warehouse jobs around here.
rottenrobi · 56-60, F
@greenmountaingal Its a permanent job, and I just went and applied for it. The owner of the company did a quick bit about how "this isn't a pretty job", and "it's hard work". But I knew I could do it, and he hired me. I had to prove myself to the other guys for the first week, but now were all good. It is hard work, but I like it.
When you get yo feeling good, go and apply, especially to a job you know how to do well. Your confidence will come through.
You've got this!
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
Well, I think you can do whatever you want.. but on this one it's not up to me or us on here as you would probably find a lot of ageism out there and people unwilling to hire you.
Dateless · 26-30, M
I’ve noticed that with my mother trying to find a job, they do discriminate toward age.@Adaydreambeliever
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Adaydreambeliever I am, of course, wondering about that. I have heard it's a good job for retired people, and one that there is a demand for right now...And I do look fairly young for my age.
ScarletWitch · 26-30, F
You should be able to live the rest of your life without having to work. :(
morrgin · F
Not too old at all. My mom is 73 and still a fitness instructor.
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@morrgin Inspiring!

I really hope you get the job. Like the others said there is a lot of ageism in the workforce these days. Even at my age i have really noticed how much more difficult it is to get work due to my age. Ultimately though an employer just wants a good and reliable employee and would probably really appreciate you.

No you aren't too old. I'm impresssed. I know I can't drive a forklift.
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@SW-User Neither can I. I would be going to a certification school if I decide to do it.
SW-User
@greenmountaingal oh well congrats. I would try for it then.
Lostpoet · M
I don't think you are ever too old, but is that what you want to do?
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Lostpoet Yes, I think so. If I can get certified, then hired at my age, that is. I would want to operate an indoor narrow aisle fork lift in a warehouse.
Lostpoet · M
@greenmountaingal I have a certificate, they just give you a little packet to study and then all you have to do is move some items around. If you can drive a car then being able to operate a forklift is a piece of cake.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
If their company employee insurance will take it go for it !!
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Picklebobble2 That is a major worry. I think the fact that I only want to work part time would help.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@greenmountaingal If you feel up to the challenge of it go for it i say !! Good for you !
Dateless · 26-30, M
Nope I’d actually prefer a woman driver in a warehouse setting.
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Dateless Thank you. I can imagine them calling me "Grandma."
fancyboy · 61-69, M
No way! Go for it! Some of those jobs pay really well!
BijouPleasurette · 36-40, F
It shouldn't be too old as long as you don't do anything like this:

Barebum61 · 61-69, M
No way if that's what you want to do ,go for it
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Barebum61 Thank you! I would have to put money into training for it, maybe sometime next year.
SW-User
Nope, if you can do the work and want the job, go for it!
BlueRain · F
No it’s not too old.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
I have that job. Need to have good driving skills. And if you never drove one before. Go easy.
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@MrBrownstone I do have an excellent (car) driving record. I once operated an indoor forklift in a warehouse in 1970.
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
What kind of forklift do you operate?
Tminus6453 · M
If you can find someone to hire you.... are you forklift certified?
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Tminus6453 I would have to go to a forklift certification school.
Tminus6453 · M
@greenmountaingal Its only a day long class around here to get certified
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Tminus6453 Good news. It's probably the same here in this area.
turbineman40 · 80-89, M
No way are you to old at 73! I am 78 and have my certification
TexChik · F
@turbineman40 were talking California... since when did they do anything about public safety... only illegal alien safety
rottenrobi · 56-60, F
@TexChik I'm a Californian and we keep more then just our illegals safe.
TexChik · F
TexChik · F
Can you drive a fork lift ?
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@TexChik Well...I did once...in 1970...Actually, I would need to go to certification school and learn. I have a feeling forklifts have changed since 1970 but the basic job is the same.
TexChik · F
@greenmountaingal yep gotta have the certification, then you’re golden .
marsbar · F
I think that’s great if you can handle it. 👍🏼
Softandsweet2 · 31-35, F
Not I'd everyone else there can run like hell :)
SweetMae · 70-79, F
As long as you know you can do it!
