Would you choose to have a genetically modified child?

Poll - Total Votes: 8
Yes
No
Show Results
You can only vote on one answer.
If you choose yes, you would ensure that they would be stronger, smarter, and better looking compared to other kids. They would also be immune from diseases.

If you choose no, they would have be born without any advantages and would be at risk for heritable defects and illnesses.

Such a philosophical question, before I answer the poll I have to put this forward, I happen to like myself for not agreeing with Kurzweil's opinion that seeing his Grandmother on video camera is the same as real life.
SW-User
No. I'm sure they'd learn to deal with whatever life gives them just like everyone else has been. They could still be happy and good people.

@Ephemeral: One has to consider that maybe our struggles are what make us grow as people. We in the US have so many advantages compared to the rest of the world, and we're more miserable because of it. If a designer baby grows up never knowing what it's like to work hard for something, what kind of person would they grow up to be?
SW-User
Yes. Also, what new problems could they face that none of us could help them with because we've never been through it? @HalfCactus:

@Ephemeral: They may resent the fact that they're different, they may become narcissistic when they realize how much better they are than everyone, they may even feel like commodities that were designed for ulterior reasons. There's really a lot of emotional struggles that could come with being so physically and mentally superior to the people around them. Or maybe, just maybe, they'll feel a sense of obligation to use their gifts to better the lives of those around them. It's interesting to think about
CRISPR, DNA research about to change the evolution of mankind.
If it doesn't happen here it will happen somewhere. @softspokenman:

@softspokenman: There are lots of advantages for a government to have genetically enhanced people. Less healthcare costs, more productivity, more innovation, better soldiers, and so on. In a world dominated by superpowers like the US and Russia, it wouldn't be hard to imagine that some country out there would also want a slice of the pie
@HalfCactus: It could also produce people with an intelligence level to end all the BS between superpowers and to change the life experience into a beautiful one for everyone, especially in the future, instead of the living hell that it is.

that is one huge slippery slope...where would it end?
SW-User
@Fernie: The same people that decide it now. Mental illness is stigmatized, nobody wants to date a fat girl or a short guy, pedophilia is demonized, stupid people are seen as a burden, the list can go on. People have the option of eliminating those traits with genetic modification

@HalfCactus: you sir...are dangerous
SW-User
@Fernie: I'm just asking questions and providing facts. I'm not making any decisions one way or the other
I would want the same for them as I recieved.To be a natural child.I think it would be shallow and selfish to ever want or expect a perfect child.

The poll is not looking good for progress
SW-User
@Jackaloftheazuresand: Progress would be? That's where the slippery slope starts. Humanity has actually made a lot of progress in acceptance and in love. To me, with heart, that progress stops when we stop accepting/having children that accept themselves with flaws and by virtue others.

Nothing ever changed from acceptance
SW-User
@Starshine: Any particular reason why?
