What do you think is behind the bleak state of humanity?

This question is based off my last one, where most people concluded that there's not enough synergy (for lack of a better word) in our species. What do you think is causing the divide in our fractured existence?
The lack of compatibility between some of our differences (particularly our ways of thinking)?
I wonder if humanity got along better when we were simpler, when everything was life or death, and we just stayed in our predetermined roles?
Our gained intelligence and complexity has helped us immensely, but it's almost like we just haven't learned how to weild and live with it masterfully yet. It's just a thought. 🤷‍♀️

@AmbivalentFriability: Hard to say if simplicity would necessarily help things. I keep thinking of the isolated tribes in South America that have been known to attack or kill pretty much anyone different that they came across. They're about as simple as humanity gets and they still resort to warlike tendencies.

Although I won't disagree that our advances in intelligence are probably happening too fast for us to properly deal with. Particularly when it comes to self-preservation. I think that the very instinct that keeps us alive is the same one tearing us apart. We're so intent on taking care of our own needs and fulfilling our own desires that we often see others as threats to that.

Back when we had limited resources and all of our endeavors had uncertain outcomes, it would make sense to prioritize self-preservation in order to live to see another day. But now we have a world of surplus and are the wealthiest we've ever been, and despite that still feel the need to compete and look out for our own interests. It's like we're motivated by a constant state of fear that keeps us from fully trusting and cooperating with one another

It's called nature, life will always be difficult and you can't escape that

@Jackaloftheazuresand: This is more with regards to people being at such odds with one another, not necessarily at odds with natural forces

Others are nature
Money then religion

@theoneyouwerewarnedabout: This is almost exactly what Communism aimed to do away with
Pretty sure the UN has the same idea
