How often do you find yourself debating on here?

Rarely now coz it's a waste of time

@CopperCicada: The purpose of debate is rarely to change the mind of the person you are debating. He/she has likely reviewed the available evidence already and reached conclusions different from yours. The purpose of the debate is to convince the less informed masses who may be following the debate.
GwydionFrost56-60, M
@CopperCicada: Much like yourself, I'm far more concerned with gaining truth than winning the argument. Since my brother is the same, we've come to the conclusion that it must have been the way we were raised-- we WANT true information, so we BEG you-- prove us wrong, correct our mistakes... so from this moment forward, we have the correct and true information and will not be speaking from misinformation!

Debate is not a bad thing, but once it deteriorates into a shouting match it has left the world of an exchanging of ideas and become a contest to see who can shout the other one down.
@justmerae: Judy was so beautiful in so many ways, and yet so human and 'troubled'...A lot of tragedy mixed with that beauty.
SW-User
@puck61: and all night long,too? 馃馃槼
SW-User
@puck61: Yes she was. :) The girl next door looks, she always wanted to be glamorous.

Once a claim is made, I ask for the verifiable proof. This requires all pronouns to be defined (the mysterious "they" responsible for all the worlds' woes, prime example), and all claims to have multiple reliable sources ("I read it on a Facebook meme" is instant failure in my opinion). If my opponent is more interested in name calling or insulting me, rather than discuss the topic they themselves brought up....? That's the sign they have no first hand experience with it or nothing personal to add to the misinformation they are preaching as truth.

Wash my hands-- walk away, without looking back.
GwydionFrost56-60, M
@Meowsolini: Thank you! Hard to find fans of critical thinking and logic and reason. You'd think there would be more practitioners and fans, since the rules that govern them are equal to all... ;)
okaybut56-60, M
@GwydionFrost: I find the same issue. Unfortunately when I ask for proof, they give me a subjective quote somewhat unrelated and when I discount it, inform me I am off topic. Or give a sweeping generalization coming from personal emotions stated as truth. What I find in general (note that term "in general") many (note that term "many") people of the left political spectrum think with their emotions as opposed to reason. I have just stated a broad generalizing statement and other than personal experience I cannot back it up, so in a debate if someone gave me facts I would adjust accordingly (I only wish this on my other debate participants - often to know avail) - what they think is what is true.
GwydionFrost56-60, M
@okaybut: This totally reminds me of a study I just heard about on NPR... where humans have amazing skills to solve complicated word problems... until you change the topic to a political hot button. Then, a bizarre effect occurs-- that political bias actually interferes with a person's ability to solve the equation correctly unless the solution already matches their political disposition.

Screw it-- here's the proof (LOL):

Only seconds ago I was. Another user was trying to convince me that Neil Degrasse Tyson has "no academic credentials". Apparently having a fucking doctorate in astrophysics means you don't know shit.
SW-User
@BlueMetalChic: That's so stupid it's funny!
SW-User
@BlueMetalChic: Lol Perhaps that person has their own definition of credentials
BlueMetalChick26-30, F
@Alex1610: Aaaaaaapparently lol

[c=#7700B2]a lot more to what I would actually like. damn my stubbornness [/c]
SW-User
@PlumBerries: Lol At least it keeps your brain working
I do some commentary. Debating is impossible now. If your sources are from google, all you're doing is going to another debate to get validation for the position you've taken in your debate! It's crazy.
@Alex1610: Might as well just be a 'meme war' because, when you use google, it's just a source war. Google can tell you that the earth is flat if you want it to!
SW-User
@puck61: Meme war is way less intense 馃槑
@Alex1610: And it can be hilarious from either side! I've enjoyed plenty of memes that were meant to be a 'jab' at me. If I fail to guard an opponents riposte and a point is scored with a meme, I won't hesitate to 'heart' or 'like' the offending post. Same goes for persuasive rhetoric or even solid proof. The problem with politics and religion is that everyone is dealing with intangibles at the end of the day. How do you 'prove' a feeling?
SW-User
Rarely now too. It doesn't seem to be worth it anymore.

Pherick41-45, M
Too often, I need to just stop. Not many people want to actually post facts, sources, articles and have a real debate about something. Its much easier to name calling, post idiotic memes and such then do any real talking.
SW-User
@Pherick: Shhhh....Relax...they're here to entertain us
Pherick41-45, M
@Alex1610: Thats what I have to keep in mind. :) One user, in particular, jumps out to me, they can't say anything without insulting, its like your Grandma who says horrible things about other races because "thats how it was back then" .... Just bless her heart.
SW-User
@Pherick: Husshhh......*keeps masaging* My grandma died...
it's one of the reasons I like SW better than EP... I'm not sure how or why, but it's easier here to have an interest'n exchange of ideas... seems to be more people who get the idea of enjoy'n differences...and I'm feel'n less hesitant to express my opinions.
SW-User
@bethsmiles: I agreed. EP was a chaos!
okaybut56-60, M
Somewhat when it comes to politics and personal responsibility. 馃樀
okaybut56-60, M
@Alex1610: I don't debate that much so not too tiring. I say a fair amount, but only on the two topics and only when I see something I think is extremely biased. :)
SW-User
@okaybut: Prejudice can come from stupidity and stupidity can go with stubbornness lol
okaybut56-60, M
@Alex1610: Very good quote. :)
AlmostAnAngel100+, F
Hardly ever...people just end up name calling. Especially about politics. They show just how childish they really are.
SW-User
@AlmostAnAngel: Oh, not with the politics!
SW-User
Waste of time was this question

You gonna ruin my diet
SW-User
Oh, but you're gonna love it lol

Same here. I no longer waste my time or energy.

it's just people screaming ME MEE
SW-User

SW-User
Waste of time and someone just tried to drag me into one about religion and God. It is a topic that can never be won, so it isn't even like other ones where there is a right and a wrong answer.
SW-User
@hyg346: Opinions can not be won? It is too bad that people cannot debate without it turning ugly. I like to learn, I like to see opposing ideas, it helps one not become rigid in thinking, but shouting the other down or resorting to name calling never accomplish that.
SW-User
@hyg346: At the end of the day, we have a good laugh in retrospect
Carver31-35, F
Same here, it really is. It's always going to end the same way it began: with you and the other person not seeing eye-to-eye and not agreeing on the topic at hand. Always.
SW-User
@Carver: Plus it can get even worse and turn into a screaming party

@Alex1610: I didn't say it had to be fair. I do want to win after all! ;)

Mordi31-35, M
Not often. It usually amounts to nothing.
SW-User
@Mordimoux: Exactly
chrisCAM
Rarely. I prefer to keep it light hearted here.
SW-User
@chris62ca: Me too
Not really ever.
SW-User
@ProdigalSummer: Why not?
It's mostly a waste of time. Most people are never going to change their minds and are just looking to argue, not debate.
SW-User
@ProdigalSummer: Couldn't agree more

I usually keep it light-hearted. Sometimes I will post something serious which is a disagreement with someone else. But after a post or two, I figure "I've given my view, they've given theirs, there is no point in prolonging this." So I stop. It does not bother me that "they have the last word." Otherwise it would go on forever.
