Why do most service places ask for tips? not just sit-down places to eat but even the drive thru... i dont get a tip for doing my job.. LOL

Do you get adequately paid without tips?
Waiting is badly paid in an attempt to get the staff to be courteous and polite, that's the theory anyway. The managers use it as an excuse to pay poorly and some customers see it as an opportunity to prank the staff.

@GeniUs: Waiting is different... if i get good service then i tip well...i tip EXTREMELY well if deserved and good if they dont do well

I like to tip too but as you say the service has to be right.

They ask for them but you don't have to give them. If they put out a jar and people put money in it then it's free money.

@BlueRain: Or classless? you pick :-) hehehe

Probably because most service industry jobs are paid at minimum wage.

@Picklebobble2: thats the choice you make...right :-)

Service sector jobs are largely done by folk who have little choice.
Maybe they're single parents or have caring commitments or college to attend or maybe they are easily employable in that sector because of their limited educational skills or any other number of reasons.
