This week was the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Arras, where Vimy Ridge was taken and the Australian 4th division took 50% casualties

Because that's how much more effective the Hindenburg Line was than the defences of the previous two and a half years. Sadly, 50% casualties were on the high side of normal.
Aussie? Really?

Yeah. The Canadians attacked Vimy Ridge and the Australians attacked further south after General Birdwood heard about the Canadian successes. Unfortunately, the 12 Mk1 tanks they asked for got "lost" and only one was actually effective. Once they broke through the (sometimes 30m) thick barbed wire, the Germans utilised Ludendorff's defensive tactics, leaving the Aussies cut off and raked by machine gun fire from pillboxes in the (much further back) second line.
