No, that's not a mistake. I don't care what you want to be. I want to see how you want to become

Kind and fair.
Sometimes that seems like a lot to hope for. I can see how I might become bitter before I get there. But maybe that will mean I haven't really matured at all.

Kindness and fairness are things that must be practiced. Empathy is a skill like any other. I mean, we all are empathetic to one degree or another. We've been biologically programmed to be. But in general we reserve that trait for our own circles. There would be little evolutionary benefit to extend it to strangers.

I think sometimes you have to suffer before you can appreciate it. To see firsthand how big of a difference kindness and fairness can make in someone's situation. Even then, it will take a while to get used to it. A lot of people are too involved in their own realities to realize they're not alone. But when you realize that kindness connects you to others, connects you to the world, then you can embrace it much closer than you might be right now.
