Should families who made a fortune from slavery be made to give it to charity?

Carla1951 · 70-79, F
Explain first how something a relative may have done 100 or 200 years ago has to do with me? Do you have the very slightest idea of how this would be researched and proven? It's history. History happened. You cannot change the past. And the future has yet to be born.
i find it hard to believe after war destroyed all property in the south, that someone thinks that those people stayed rich and it was because of slavery. and nobody owes anyone for slavery. i did not own slaves, therefore i don't owe anyone for it. here's an idea. how about everyone stop being so prejudiced and ignorant and treat each other with respect...hmmm? that would make up for the past mistakes and horrors committed by our ancestors....all of them!

European Royal families?
@mrgreeen: i have heard of those but have never seen one. i have known people whose ancestors hoarded money and valuables so that when different wars were over or the depression ended, they were the richest people around...

Don't you believe all those families are now dead? What history have you read on this? It's DONE. Get over it! Would you be willing to trade places with your relatives in Africa? The do so. Go find them. Meet them. For them, TIME has passed. Let it Go.

What about the Indians? We stole their country. It'll take a fuckload of casinos to pay that back.

@mrgreeen: that's s glass half empty argument. What was done was legal at the time. The glass half full argument would be that the African American descendants now live in the greatest country in the world. They can use their freedom and the very same system that enslaved 200 years ago to become educated and wealthy.

Everyone here now is here by choice as a citizen. If those opportunities are better elsewhere, no one will stop them or prevent them from returning. Lest we forget, we fight for their freedom(s) too.

@mrgreeen: or so "you'd" like the world to think. however, only politicians pander to their constituents with promises undelivered for decades. in this instance, what scares both sides of the house and senate is that businessmen just don't care to pander. they hire, fire, fix and build. trump won't give two shits if the best candidate in front of him is black or white. the uproar is accountability for both the government and the citizenry.

Being white is not a convictable offense for something that happened 200 years ago just as poverty is not a credible defense for something that happened 200 years ago.

All of us benefit from better access to improved affordable education and an economy that can support employment at all levels of the labor spectrum.

No. They SHOULD give it to the descendants of their slaves !
mrgreeen · M
Most of the families wouldn't want the blood money made from their relatives
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
But at the very least it's recognition for the wrongdoing.
If the descended family decided to....make a bonfire of it or split it between them or create a foundation....whatever !
At least it's their choice !
