Can anyone give me some guidance on some online research I have to do?

I have my first assignment for my internship. I’m supposed to gather information on the leading research on top sustainability technologies. Have to get who’s doing the research and where, what organization/university/laboratory etc. and contact info of people involved. I’m having trouble figuring out which institutions are the LEADING researchers of these different technologies. For example, electric public transportation or nuclear power, I’ve been trying to figure out who’s actually leading the charge in those areas. Anyone have any advice?

Obviously there's no one way to this. I can think of the following steps.

1) go to scholar.google.com and use the keywords 'state of the art in electric public transportation' or state of the art in *insert field name*.

2) If you're lucky you'll find an exact state of the art review paper. If not, then go to whatever you do find.

3) Contact the author(s) and ask them about the latest technology in the field and who is doing the leading research.

4) Using that info as lead you'll find useful stuff.

OR

1) find out the latest research topics on that stuff yourself. Also, find out the mega projects related to those field (like construction of the tallest tower or something). And find out the researchers involved in the company that has taken the project or the authors.

Ultimately, you probably have to find someone who is doing research on that field and ask them who are the leading researchers on that field.
