Would you say that a person who prefers to rent rather than own/buy a house isn't financially stable?

Someone told me that I wasn't financially stable because I opt to rent instead of purchase a home. What does that have to do with being financially stable?

That depends on what they do with the money instead. For example investing in a blue chip share fund that earns enough to pay the rent offers some advantages inflexibility and for many years would have been a better nett investment. But your own home is a big , relatively safe capital investment for the long term and the one most people choose.

My mom has been renting since 2011. She just feels like it's a better option for her personally. I say that whatever you feel is best for you, do it.

@SubstantialKick lol, the ironic thing is: a lot of older people who own homes are selling those homes and using the income to rent.

Doesn't make any sense, while some simply can't afford to own, there are numerous other reasons as well.

“Becoming financially stable means being completely debt-free, being able to pay your monthly living expenses with extra money left over. ... As you can see, the answers are varied but a recurring theme in all of them is the idea of being able to cover the “basics” while having some extra money left over.

no I wouldn't. You could have more money saved and more income than the person that is owning/buying a home.

I think some people choose to buy a home only because society says they should. Otherwise, they'd probably still be renting.
TheArbitrator · 36-40, M
@iamnikki Right, I am earning interest on money I could use as a down-payment on a home. Instead of paying interest on a mortgage.

No. I have a son who’s allergic to hammers so he’s smart to rent. He would spend a fortune on the upkeep and maintenance even if it meant working 3 jobs. He hates that stuff.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Keepitsimple yea that's my fear with a house. Too much upkeep
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
There is a lot and he knows he doesn’t want to worry about it. As long as you’re happy who cares 😉@iamnikki

Renting vs buying a home is a viable option for many people. Some folks just don't want the responsibility of home ownership and all the problems it brings. Let the owner worry about replacing the roof, repairing the plumbing, paying the taxes, etc.

That's just misinformation on their part. They have probably heard it said before that only financially stable people invest in property and didn't give it much other thought..like preferences.

{thearbitrator ] it is not always your choice and i agree with you . taking on a mortgage is a big responsibility . it maybe a cowards way to some renting but there is less risk involved
TheArbitrator · 36-40, M
@smiler2012 You never really own anything anyway. The government could hike your property taxes 100% at any moment.

However I just want to add that I've heard it's cheaper to own a house, than it is to rent an apartment.
TheArbitrator · 36-40, M
@twiigss I agree. I have done the math and it does seem that way in the long term.

@TheArbitrator Yea. A person I know currently rents but is working to get a house. Because they too see the long term advantages of owning vs. renting. And rent around here at just about every place is $1000+
