People would rather be told how to live rather than figure it out for themselves!

YOU?
PerfectionOfTheHeart · 46-50, F Best Comment
We’re taught from an early age to follow though, and that by going against such guidelines will ultimately lead to us being seen as an outcast to our fellow man. We are built to connect yet society threatens us with being laughed out, belittled, and shunned when we try to connect with our inner voice and share it with others in the hopes of possibly finding our tribe. And then you have those who encourage us to think for ourselves, but when we do it’s met with a “No, not like that” response.

People get tired of not being able to win, man, so they just go with the flow because it causes less waves in a life that so many are just trying to get from one day to the next without being too consumed by the darkness. It’s a shame to not embrace the ability to think for yourself and live life in a way that you feel speaks the truest to your soul, but it’s not exactly easy to be that person in today’s society. Only the highly evolved can pull it off and sadly we’re a tired society...with good reason.

In my opinion, self-awareness is the most important part of it. If you're doing what everyone else is doing, following trends or whatever, but you genuinely enjoy it and do it because it makes you happy, then you're doing the right thing. The harm comes from people who never both to think about whether or not they're doing it cos they like it, or if it's just cos they're told it's what to do.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@CestManan Oh absolutely there are. In fact, I think there's more people who "fit in" out of a feeling of necessity than there are people who do it because they sincerely like it.
@BlueMetalChick That's the question; do we do the things we do because others are doing them (mindthink, groupthink, peer pressure) or because we think for ourselves. I think it requires some investigation and a bit of being willing to analyze ourselves.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@MsAlaineEYes I think back to when I was in middle school, and high top sneakers were all the rage. And I liked that, because I already like hi-tops. I think they look cool and they're comfortable. I would have worn them even if they weren't fashionable at the time. But even so, I did enjoy that they were so popular. It was pretty cool to get a new pair and wear them to school and compare with your friends which brands and colors you each had.

But like you said, the primary focus is personal. At the same time as hi-tops were in, so were flat brimmed baseball caps. And I don't really like those so much, so even though they were popular, I never wore them. I think the decision to wear a flat brim in spite of not liking them would be a good example of what people do all too often when they don't think for themselves.

And a bit of a brag here, I had THE coolest pair of hi-tops in my entire school. Everyone had the Vans, the Converse, the Osiris, the DC, of course Nike too. But I had a pair of Moby sneakers from Penguin brand. And they were the fucking star players lol the first day I wore them, all my classmates were floored.

Some people are really convinced that some things on TV are not scripted.
I try to tell them that putting something on TV costs good money so they are not gonna leave ANYthing to chance.
Tracos · 51-55, M
@CestManan exactly! no such thing as reality shows. its commercial entertainment.

and the clients of the networks are the advertisers, not the viewers

the one who pays decides the plays

Have a friend who is either skittish about revealing his beliefs or has no beliefs to speak of since I've known him. I noticed he mimics the views and beliefs of famous athletes and celebrities that he glorifies because he likes them and not because those views are actually his. I keep reminding him those aren't his own beliefs, those are someone else's but he just shucks and jives. I think having strong personal views is not something he values or holds in high regard so he doesn't stick his neck out for anything.

Today many people see thinking for yourself is stressful and critical thinking skills are a two-edged sword. Although they can help you sort out the world and its attendant consequences to perhaps find meaning, they can also make you stick your neck out for anyone to have a go at. It's that warm sense of security that I figure more and more people today are less and less inclined to risk. As they say in the vernacular, the nail that stands out gets beat down.

@PatKirby It really isn't comfortable and doesn't feel safe when the pressure of "society" demanding our obedience, praise and compliance, has consequences. I get it. Great points. Thanks for contributing to the conversation. The more the better.

🤣 Love the art..."error" stamped on her forehead. Reminds me of I Robot.
In the Uni, Communication is in the "Arts" but aren't Art and Science so intrinsically connected that the science part of both is DATA, EVIDENCE, INVESTIGATION, etc. The art part is the BEAUTY of the esthetics, balance, the solving of problems.
One example of how they work together:
The Golden Ratio — also known as Golden Mean, Golden Part, Fibonacci
My father and I argued this all the way through my Junior High and High School years. He wanted me to major in the sciences. I wanted to major in art. I said to him, "Aren't art and science intertwined?"

My first winning science fair project was on Moire patterns...the use of two patterns to create a third pattern.

My second winning project was on the use of chemicals to alter standard commercial dyes and create new colors.

Beauty, in design, (which was my first major), involves engineering and careful thought.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@4meAndyou so many good "artists," are also scientists. It is then do called "scientific method," that allows careful analysis of things, designs, etc.
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
Up is down, down is up. I get called a sheep for not mindlessly agreeing with "experts". Doesn't matter how often the"experts" are wrong.
@4meAndyou It's bad enough that we have smart phones that never shut off and they can be detected even then. The TV in Fahrenheit 451 reminds me of our smart tvs and alexa. So if you are interested in the fiction/prophet authors and what they thought about today; read both of these...short reads. You can probably find online.
4meAndyou · F
@MsAlaineEYes I have probably read, (almost), every sci fi book written by Ray Bradbury. I am a huge fan of sci fi, and fantasy and I've been reading for a long time.
@4meAndyou truth is stranger than (science) fiction...👍🎯😳
But if you educate yourself differently than the rest you’re still unacceptable to society. Easy Rider is an old movie that applies to so much more than obvious
@MsAlaineEYes it’s on Netflix now, I haven’t finished watching it in a long time though
@Justafantasy You mean "To Kill a Mockingbird" is on Netflix or "Easy Rider"? thanks.
@MsAlaineEYes easy rider

Yeah just think how different it would be if everyone total stopped watching the "news" and propaganda from the "experts" on the virus/vaccine. It's where they get their info, like it's gospel
Magenta · F
Totally not me.
But yes. Or at least retain your own individuality and mind, even when watching. It actually makes me laugh, scoff and rebel.
Rose0415 · 36-40, F
I'll repeat what I said on a post yesterday:
That misconception is that anyone who takes it is a "sheep". Um, let me tell you something. I will bet you that the majority of people who take the vaccine took it because they darn well wanted to, not because other people are doing it. I myself am a grown woman and can make a simple decision on my own. Calling someone a sheep for what they decide to do with their own body makes you look like a uneducated fool, LOL.
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
@Rose0415 I think what she's getting at is the irony of someone with a popular opinion calling other people sheep.

I think the key is in cultivating a sincere passion for honing one's skill in truly mastering not giving a shit. It's an art form. 😊

I like watching TV.
But I can separate myself from it. I don't have a need to fit in.
SW-User
It’s a shame I could only heart this once.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
My mother drove me crazy as a kid. I would ask a question and rather than answer, she'd find a way to get me to look up the answer.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@MsAlaineEYes sadly my grandson is also on line. Hopefully next year will be in person. I will have 2 grandsons in college next year.

Science includes a way of thinking, communications is a science.

BTW; my son introduced this to me; he had been studying it...lol
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@MsAlaineEYes yes, think about the classic artists, many were amazing scientists. DaVinci was a well respected scientist and artist.
Zonuss · 41-45, M
True. The objective is to follow. And abandon all personal responsibilities for yourself. From birth we are taught to be dependent on others. Taught to think like others. And neglect our own emotional self while waiting for someone else to tell us how to navigate our own lives. Being a leader requires us to be cut off from.the crowd. To use our own intuition and skills. We must stop disabling ourselves and depend on our own inner strength and capabilities if we want to be set free.

We must stop disabling ourselves and depend on our own inner strength and capabilities if we want to be set free.
Yes...followers follow...leaders follow when they believe in the cause and there is a leader whom, with good conscience, they can follow.
smiler2012 · 56-60
{@msalaineeyes] personally people should be able to forge there own destinies make that mistake once in a while we are not all stereotypes
@smiler2012 The statement is not my opinion; I borrowed it to START THE CONVERSATION and I agree with you. But I believe we all, at one time or another or for a lifetime, fall into "group think" and just "go with the flow" without questioning "why".
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
Do you consider laws as being told how to act? Some norms are necessary in a just society.
@samueltyler2 Oh, I agree. No issue with decorum; where they would infringe upon one's right to choose for themselves, yes. I have an issue with them then.
eyeno · M
Its better and easier to Lead, than to Follow.

@eyeno My motto has always been; "If there is a leader of a cause that I want to follow, I will follow. If there is a cause that has no leader, I will be one. " or shorter "If there isn't a leader, be the leader".
Absolute truth

How do you know that? You also shouldn’t assume.
Wordlover · F
@MsAlaineEYes who are these people who are being told how to live? And who is telling them?🤔
@Wordlover I'm sorry; you didn't understand that this is a RHETORICAL question and requires thought not debate. Ms Alaine E Yes decided to be miscellaneous and wake some of you up out of your snarky, dull retorts. Don't think too hard about it; it may give you a headache, or not. The question asked is "YOU?????". Answer or not.
Wordlover · F
@MsAlaineEYes ok. 👍
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@samueltyler2 i know, right??? hilarious.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@MsAlaineEYes but, you do know what happens to the divergent thinker!
@samueltyler2 I've read "the book" Divergent and saw the movie. You saw how they had to HIDE their divergence. Their adaptability; their immunity from strict control...at least inwardly.

@Stereoguy Now you're speaking my language. We are all walking our own path; not playing follow the leader.

Example; slightly turned from your statement: IF I AM TOLD that I am "to do" something that "everyone should do" but THAT PERSON, etc. has done what I think to be dishonorable, disingenuous, hypocritical, horrific deeds, then WHY would I want to follow them? They are telling me that to DO THE OPPOSITE is the RIGHT and BETTER choice.😉
I think we've gotten high on rights and we've basically given up any sense of responsibility. The peeps keeping the country safe, the streets safe, the food safe, putting the fires out-- they're motivated by responsibility.
Yes, agree. We ARE responsible to others whether we know it or not; we are connected. Those who appear to be "high on rights" should, imho, be HIGH on RIGHTS FOR EVERYONE, just not themselves. We are IN THIS together.
@CopperCicada Please list some for those who may not understand what you are referring to: might a few be "responsibility/duty" to vote, serve on courts, carry licenses to do business, deal ethically with others, etc?

@CopperCicada FREE SPEECH sites: which ones are they and how do they appear to be a form of propaganda???
propaganda
