Are people that upset over 6 of Dr. Seuss' books being removed from shelves for controversial imagery?

Because I don't see the issue. It's not like ALL of his books have been removed. Other than that, somebody's gonna make a fortune reselling those 6 books. 😂

I don't know the exact nature of the objections to those books, but from a google image search, I'm getting that this is being cited as one of the problems --

which tbh seems kind of strange because the utensils, foot, and hat he has there are just genuine depictions of Chinese culture. IDK if he's chasing a dog there out-of-frame (which honestly would make this whole situation make more sense), but even if that's the case, eating dogs is also an established part of Chinese culture. 💅
So if he depicted the boy as white, it would be white supremacy. If he depicted the boy as black it would be racist. I can also assume according to cancel culture depicting the boy as male is sexist or some kind of sex supremacy. One thing I can be happy about at least is that most cancel culture people also believe in abortion. @BlueVeins

@stratosranger ehhh that's a stretch, the image we're looking at right now is kinda borderline even with all that cultural awareness in mind
Point is once the door is opened to this type of mindless bullshit, it never ends.@BlueVeins

I'm not upset, but I think we should clarify what's happened here. The books are not being removed from shelves (not by any overarching action), Dr. Seuss' estate has taken a few older books (that to my knowledge were never among his most popular) out of print, which any estate that owns publishing rights is free to do for any reason. This specific action isn't so bothersome as much as this general trend of "pre-emptive" cancelation. If "wokeism" isn't hegemonic, why is so much kowtowing to it? Erasing the past isn't reckoning with the past.

@SW-User Ahh, I see.

@SW-User so true

I’m more upset about life as we know it not being the same. I think the whole thing is BS. Everything since the summer is BS. No matter what they take off the bookshelves, stop selling or take down it won’t change the way I think or accept as the new normal.
MethDozer · M
@Keepitsimple I hear ya.
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
I think it's absolutely ridiculous. I've also heard the claim that older cartoons like Tom & Jerry and Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies are too "violent" for kids nowadays 🤦‍♂️.
@SubstantialKick Yes because the average garbage fare on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network is so much better. 😴
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@stratosranger I stopped giving a crap about both of those channels in the mid-late 2000's.
@SubstantialKick Ditto. But even earlier than that. Those MGM and WB cartoons from back in the day were and still are the best. And I don’t give a damn about anyone who says otherwise

Even the biggest deplorable would agree that the racism inherent in the dated illustrations is way over the top.

I agree that the publishing company made the best move. They were being very low key about it but it is way beyond time for illustrations I showed and some of the pictures of oriental background portrayed in a degrading way. It wouldn’t be fun if we as whites suffered the same acceptance if we were portrayed in a bigoted manner. Society had a way of shaming bigots by humor of Norman Lear with “All in the Family”. You can believe in the 70s that no one wanted to be pointed out as a bigot in the manner of Archie Bunker. We had gone so far after the Civil Rights legislation that it was easy to take it for granted. These illustrations can be showcased in the Smithsonian Institute about how stupidly acceptant we were of ignorant understandings of other cultures but it is long time for that pure unadulterated ignorance to be treated as accepted mainstream!

@Pfuzylogic agreed

{@autumn25 ] 🤫 what books and what images are you talking about especially. is this another case of the over zealous politically correct brigade getting there knickers in a twist again

“And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street”, “If I Ran the Zoo”, “McElligot’s Pool,” “On Beyond Zebra!,” “Scrambled Eggs Super!,” and “The Cat’s Quizzer.”

In “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street,” a character described as “a Chinaman” has lines for eyes, wears a pointed hat, and carries chopsticks and a bowl of rice. (Editions published in the 1970s changed the reference from “a Chinaman” to “a Chinese man.”) In “If I Ran the Zoo,” two characters from “the African island of Yerka” are depicted as shirtless, shoeless and resembling monkeys.

Isn’t it so ironic? All these claims of trying to get rid of this stuff, when they are just giving it more attention, not less, and making it more valuable 🤪

@YoungPoet345 Exactly

Are you kidding? We need more outrage!!! More media exploration of the public!! It’s just not enough 🤪😂😂😂😂😱

Maybe people need to know what the word fiction means.

I'm out of the loop on this, what's going on?

It's dumb anyone felt the need to remove them, it's dumb to get too bent out of shape about it.

Isn’t this coming from the same crowd who years ago would get outraged when the extremist religious right would burn books? Sounds just a bit hypocritical...well maybe a whole lot of hypocritical. @YoungPoet345
YoungPoet345 · 26-30, F
@stratosranger yeah, well, people will do what profits their agenda I guess 🤷‍♀️
It is too funny how often each side does the same damn thing the ither side does. @YoungPoet345
